President Donald Trump’s zealous propagandists have been unable to come to terms with his increasing unpopularity, instead offering a range of pathetic excuses for his cratering poll numbers

Surveys conducted for The New York Times, CNN, Fox News, and other news organizations covering the first 100 days of Trump’s second administration show his support in freefall. Trump’s overall job approval numbers are dropping into the low 40s and even high 30s while he is underwater with the public on nearly every issue.

But the audience of MAGA media outlets largely consists of Trump’s most loyal supporters, and that gives right-wing stars at Fox News and similar outlets every incentive to deny the reality that the American public has quickly become disenchanted with Trump. Media Matters’ Matt Gertz breaks their denials down into five categories:

    • The polls are fake.
    • The polls are a “psyop.”
    • The polls are only bad for now because Trump’s “agenda is not built for 100 days.”
    • Actually, the polls are “not bad.”
    • It’s impossible to not see this administration is a “huge success.”

I invite you to read the whole piece here to see how right-wing media denials are operating.

  • Fox News’ many justifications for extending Trump’s tax cut for the wealthy

    Tax plan

Fox News personalities have gone all in supporting Trump’s plan to extend his unpopular 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, offering a hodgepodge of justifications for why it’s necessary to keep taxes low for rich people and businesses as Congress moves to slash billions in social safety net programs.

Fox’s charm offensive comes as congressional Republicans debate the fine points of the looming budget, including how deeply they’ll reduce spending on Medicaid and nutrition assistance programs for working class families to offset the lost tax revenue. Fox’s view is that tax cuts, especially for the wealthy and corporations, are necessary, and from there you work backward.

Media Matters’ John Knefel wrote this great piece detailing how Fox is trying to justify Trump’s tax cuts for wealthy people and corporations.

Key Trump administration officials appeared on Fox networks over 500 times in his first 100 days in office. Trump’s “border czar” Thomas Homan led all officials with at least 59 appearances while Fox News’ Hannity led all shows with 71 interviews.

Trump officials appeared on Fox networks on 96 of this administration's first 100 days. The number of daily appearances by key officials was highest on both February 3, following Trump’s announcement of his first set of tariffs, and March 4, seemingly to prime the Fox audience for his congressional address that evening, with at least 13 appearances on each day.

Several of the officials featured on the Fox networks were former employees: former contributor Homan, former contributor Michael Waltz (Trump’s recently ousted national security adviser), former network host Sean Duffy (secretary of transportation), former Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Pete Hegseth (secretary of defense), former contributor Tulsi Gabbard (director of national intelligence), and former contributor Marty Makary (FDA commissioner). Trump has named 22 current or former Fox employees to positions in his administration.

  • In case you missed it

    • Media Matters’ Matt Gertz describes how the Trump administration’s war on the press is heating up.
    • MAGA media is following Trump’s lead in blaming the economic contraction on former President Joe Biden.
    • Fox News anchor Dana Perino claimed Trump has “great majority support” on immigration and deportations. Fox’s own polling, however, shows Trump underwater.
    • Media Matters President Angelo Carusone described how Project 2025 laid the groundwork for Trump to install right-wing media loyalists into “senior level positions.”
