CNN's Amanda Carpenter: It's “unfair” to the country to take time to investigate Christine Blasey Ford's story

Carpenter: “At some level it's unfair to make the country wait on all of those cases to follow up on allegations that just don't have a lot of leads”

From the September 19 edition of CNN Newsroom with Poppy Harlow and Jim Sciutto:

POPPY HARLOW (CO-HOST): Amanda, let me go to you first on the big picture here. And that is trying to get at what the priority is for the Senate Judiciary Committee, Republicans specifically, who make the decisions here. [Sen. Chuck] Grassley decides when this thing happens, when the vote happens. Is it to get to the bottom of it, learn the truth, regardless of how much time that will take? Or is it to get a vote on the president's nominee for the Supreme Court before the October term begins?

AMANDA CARPENTER (CNN POLITICAL COMMENTATOR): Yeah, I think this is about finding resolution on this matter. And yes, the October deadline is far more important than the November deadline. And I think that is a better argument to make than the midterms because the Supreme Court has a full docket. And at some level it's unfair to make the country wait on all of those cases to follow up on allegations that just don't have a lot of leads. Everyone wants to hear her story --

HARLOW: Amanda, Merrick Garland! Eight justices for 13 months. We lived this.

CARPENTER: Yeah, that's fine because Republicans wanted to get their judge. And this is still about getting a judge on the court.

SYMONE SANDERS (CNN POLITICAL COMMENTATOR): Wait --

CARPENTER: I don't disagree with you. And they're the ones who are elected -- listen, I'm making the political point here. This is about politics. That's what you asked me to speak about. They want to get a judge on the bench. A lot of people in this country want to get that judge on the bench. And so I don't think it's hypocritical. I think it's pretty consistent. You may not like it but that is what the politics are about, sure.
