“Taste was never the point”: The Daily Wire’s anti-trans chocolate is a bitter deal

Poor packaging, long shipping times, and questionable “fair trade” claims make the chocolate little more than an overpriced tchotchke

From Bud Light to Disney, right-wing media has breathlessly advocated for boycotts and retribution toward corporations that support LGBTQ people. In March, Hershey’s Canada featured trans woman Fae Johnstone in an ad for International Women’s Day, leading the Daily Wire’s Jeremy Boreing to promote his latest effort in a recent string of “anti-woke” alternative products: chocolate with pronouns on the wrapper.

Banking on yet another iteration of the one joke pundits make at the expense of trans people, Jeremy’s Chocolates features two types of milk chocolate bars — one with She/Her on the wrapper and the other with He/Him.

“One with nuts, one without. You know which is which,” says the listing for the candies.

The bars launched on March 3 and Boreing claimed to sell more than half a million in less than a week. The company soon promised to ship them by April 15, and then delays pushed shipping as far back as May 25. With another batch of chocolates not due to ship until October, it's evident that despite its public dedication to the grift, the Daily Wire can hardly keep up with its own orchestrated outrage.

This failure to deliver is also marked by the abysmal packaging the orders arrived in. Customers reported that the chocolate bars came with “a pathetic little cooler bag” and no styrofoam insulation, meaning those who bought into this right-wing scheme were often delivered melted chocolate.

Moreover, many people take issue with the price — $6 per candy bar for the 4-pack order, and just over $4 each for the 12-24 packs, all before tax and shipping. In the “Micro-Aggression” size, the Daily Wire’s sardonic name for fun-sized bars, the price comes out to around $1.70 per bar.

(A full-size Hershey’s bar costs less than $1.50 before tax.)

Boreing, who sells the candies through his previously established anti-woke razor company, encouraged buyers to distribute the fun-sized candies to children on Halloween. The Daily Wire appears to be oblivious to the layers of absurdity here; not only would its pundits likely call the idea of distributing pronoun candies to children “indoctrination” or “grooming” if they came wrapped in a rainbow, but a decades-old urban legend suggests that Halloween candy affiliated with razors would be received hesitantly at best.

Some may argue that the company can justify these inflated prices by 3 of its 5-6 ingredients allegedly being “fair trade.” However, looking for the chocolates on Fair Trade Certified, Fairtrade, or FLOCERT websites prompts no results, and because the packaging merely states that the bars are distributed by Jeremy’s Razors LLC, there’s no way to know how the company procures the ingredients or who it may work with.

Moreover, Fair Trade promotes issues that could conceivably raise eyebrows in the Daily Wire’s regular audience, such as gender equality, climate change and worker’s rights

All of these hurdles come before even tasting the chocolate, which several customers found to be underwhelming — right-wing YouTuber TheQuartering called it “drop shipped mid tier at best chocolate with a meme wrapper. I get owning the libs but at least commit to providing a high quality product.”

However, other customers admitted they didn’t buy the chocolate for the quality, but rather “to support the cause.” “Taste was never the point,” one user added, suggesting the candy is little more than an expensive way for those who fall within the gender binary to publicly signal their pronouns and somewhere, somehow, to own some libs by eating melted chocolate.
