What began as legislation to make political candidates disclose foreign citizenships has spiraled into a new Senate bill eliminating dual citizenships altogether after right-wing podcast hosts — including Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson, and Nick Fuentes — have spent months calling for the total end of dual citizenships in the United States. 

In March, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced legislation that would require political candidates to disclose dual citizenship in order to seek federal office. The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh spoke about the bill on his podcast, saying, “I don't know — why do we allow the concept of a dual citizenship at all?” 

During the spring and summer of 2025, various right-wing podcasters repeated similar sentiments about prohibiting dual citizenship in the United States:

• On his Uncancelable podcast in April, extremist host Stew Peters said: “Massie introduced this legislation about dual citizenship. … I don’t think it goes far enough. I don't think that just having to disclose that you have dual citizenship is enough. I think you should be illegal. You should be arrested. ... You should be tried before a military tribunal of American citizens. And if you're convicted of high crimes, crimes against humanity or treason that you should be executed.”
• Speaking about the New York City mayoral race in June, podcaster Benny Johnson said, “I don't know why this is even remotely controversial. We need to get rid of dual citizenship.”
• White nationalist podcaster Nick Fuentes claimed on his show in July: “When the right wing moved to the right and they embraced all my positions, ... they embraced my emphatic rejection of dual allegiance and dual citizenship.”
• The late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk argued on his show in August about immigrating to America: “You need to have the proof that you are all in. None of this, like, multiple passport stuff. None of this dual citizenship stuff.”
• The Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles said in August, “I hate dual citizenship.”

On October 10, Trump ally Laura Loomer hosted Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) on her podcast, asking, “Do you agree with me that it should be illegal for Muslims to hold political office in our country?” He replied that the “solution to a lot of this is to consider whether you should have to be a natural-born citizen in order to be elected to Congress or other certain offices.” She added: “I think that it's an abomination that you should be able to hold office in our country as a lawmaker and be a dual citizen.”

On October 24, Fine introduced legislation to prohibit Americans with foreign citizenships from running for office.

• One America News Network’s Dan Ball hosted Fine on October 28 to discuss the legislation, telling his audience: “Putting America first should be of utmost importance for all Americans. … Randy Fine has taken a bold step in making it not only a mission statement, but the law.”
• Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon took to his War Room podcast to promote Fine’s legislation on October 27 and declared, “I'll see you and raise you, Randy. There’s no — should be no dual citizenship in the United States of America.”

The issue of dual citizenship also came up multiple times on Tucker Carlson’s podcast throughout the year: 

• In early October, while discussing Israel, Carlson asked “why would you allow” dual citizenship and argued that “it shouldn’t be allowed for a single moment."
• After Fine’s appearance on Loomer Unleashed and before his introduction of the bill, Carlson also weighed in on the issue, arguing, “You can't have dual citizenship because you can't have dual loyalty."
• During Carlson’s controversial October 27 interview, Fuentes said, “In terms of tangible things, I don't think we disagree on any of it, like registering AIPAC and FARA, banning dual citizenship.” Carlson replied, “I think 80% of the public agrees with those things."
• In November, Carlson interviewed Ambassador Nikki Haley’s son, Nalin Haley, who said, “We should also not allow dual citizenship because that's the stupidest idea. You’re either American or you’re not.” Carlson responded, “That's totally right."

The newest iteration of the GOP’s efforts is Sen. Bernie Moreno’s (R-OH) bill, introduced on December 1, to eliminate dual citizenship altogether. Bannon, recently embroiled in controversy surrounding his connections to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, hosted Moreno on War Room to discuss the bill, telling the senator, “It’s fantastic. Great work, sir."

Knowles also praised Moreno’s new legislation on his December 2 podcast, saying: “We should not have dual citizens. Dual citizenship is absurd.” 

And Moreno appeared on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle, where host Laura Ingraham praised the bill, stating: “I hope we see legislation moving forward in the Senate on that issue. I think that is a fantastic idea."
