Fox News completely ignored Senate hearing with ousted CDC director Susan Monarez

  • Fox News completely ignored the Restoring Trust Through Radical Transparency Senate Health Committee hearing that included testimony from Susan Monarez, the recently fired Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director.

Monarez was ousted from the CDC on August 27 after reportedly refusing to commit to Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s requests to fire career scientists and to preapprove recommendations from the newly-instated CDC vaccine advisory panel without reviewing scientific evidence.

The hearing comes amid major CDC shakeups, with Kennedy having dismissed all 17 previous members of the influential panel in June. He also reportedly plans, apparently in disregard of scientific evidence, to alter the childhood vaccination schedule starting in September.

  • While Fox didn’t air any of the hearing — instead opting to air much of the United Kingdom's lavish ceremonial welcome for President Donald Trump — CNN and MSNBC both devoted significant time to the hearing. From the start of Monarez's testimony, at about 10 a.m. ET, MSNBC devoted about 2 hours and 17 minutes to the hearing, with CNN airing about 1 hour and 43 minutes.

  • Fox’s lack of coverage of the hearing is consistent with their recent approach to vaccine science and policy, as Fox figures and guests have cheered on rollbacks of vaccine mandates and helped spin the ongoing purge at the CDC.

Fox & Friends host Rachel Campos-Duffy celebrated the end of Florida's state vaccine mandates, exclaiming, “I never thought that two years, four — you know, after, you know, so much of the stuff that's been covered by Covid and the vaccines that we would live in a world in America where Florida says it's up to the parents to decide whether to vaccinate their kids or not. Times are changing. It's amazing!”
