Horowitz on Backbone Radio smeared Colorado progressives, Soros, Ellison, others

On John Andrews' Backbone Radio, right-wing activist David Horowitz engaged in a series of personal smears, racially insensitive comments, and outlandish accusations -- among them that “Internet billionaires” and “scruffy Marxist/Leninist radicals ... have basically taken over” Colorado.

On the January 7 broadcast of KNUS 710 AM's Backbone Radio, hosted by former Republican Colorado Senate president John Andrews, right-wing activist David Horowitz engaged in a series of personal smears, racially insensitive comments, and outlandish accusations. Among his claims was that “Internet billionaires” and “scruffy Marxist/Leninist radicals ... have basically taken over” Colorado.

Other dubious, debunked, or bizarre charges leveled by Horowitz -- co-author of the discredited book The Shadow Party: How George Soros, Hillary Clinton, and Sixties Radicals Seized Control of the Democratic Party (Nelson Current, August 2006) -- during the broadcast include:

  • Progressive philanthropist George Soros -- a Hungarian-born Jew who survived the Nazi occupation of Budapest -- “collaborat[ed] with the Nazis.”
  • Freshman U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) is an “Islamic black Muslim racist.”
  • The Democratic Party is “a party of appeasement and surrender” that “has done nothing for the war on terror since 9-11 except to sabotage that war.”
  • The “blood” of “two and a half million” Vietnamese and Cambodians “is on the hands of Ted Kennedy, and John Kerry, and Howard Dean, and all the other Democrats who invoke Vietnam now as some kind of a model that we should follow” for withdrawal in Iraq.
  • The New York Times and The Washington Post “continue to leak national secrets and undermine the troops.”
  • The accuser in the Duke lacrosse team rape case is “black, so she's a protected species for leftists and liberals.”

For his part, Andrews suggested, regarding the Iraq war, that “Democratic Party leaders and some of their big-money supporters, including George Soros” are engaged in “a conscious effort” to “create a second Vietnam” that “drives American support away from an important foreign commitment.”

As Media Matters for America noted, the smearing of Soros as a Nazi collaborator echoes the obscure anti-Semitic rantings of political extremist Lyndon LaRouche and his followers, who have referred to Soros as a “Nazi beast-man” and a “small cog in Adolf Eichmann's killing machine,” aiding “the Holocaust against 500,000 Hungarian Jews.”

Similarly, as Colorado Media Matters noted, Horowitz engaged in his own ranting on the August 15 broadcast of Newsradio 850 KOA's The Mike Rosen Show when he suggested that that Jews “went to the ovens” because of “psychological denial” ... “and that's the way I see the Democratic Party today.”

Following publication of the Colorado Media Matters item quoting Horowitz's remarks on Rosen's show, Horowitz appeared on the Christian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club and stated that Media Matters for America has “opened a new office in Colorado” that “is part of a Soros plan to take over the political structure of the United States.”

From the January 7 broadcast of KNUS 710 AM's Backbone Radio:

ANDREWS: I think a lot of Americans, David Horowitz, naively hear a sketch of the George Soros life story, a guy who survived both the Nazi and Communist tyranny in his native Hungary --

HOROWITZ: Well, he did it by collaborating with the Nazis.

ANDREWS: -- and comes to America and makes money in a free-market economy as a shrewd investor. People find that attractive, but then they hear some of the bitter things he said, including his desire to, quote, burst the bubble of American supremacy, and you begin to understand why you and Richard Poe called George Soros the Lenin of this shadow party.

HOROWITZ: It's put together a coalition of billionaires and street communists. You've had an experience of this in Colorado --

ANDREWS: We did.

HOROWITZ: -- where you had a couple of --

ANDREWS: We sure have.

HOROWITZ: -- dot-com, whatever they are, Internet billionaires with your scruffy Marxist/Leninist radicals, and they've basically taken over your state.

ANDREWS: Jared Polis, who made his money with Internet plays; and Patricia Stryker, who inherited hers from a father that invented medical devices; and then Tim Gill, a software entrepreneur with Quark. The three of them have been called the mini-George Soros --

HOROWITZ: Right --

ANDREWS: -- phenomenon of Colorado.

HOROWITZ: -- But I don't want to -- this is not -- I don't see this as conspiratorial. What's basically happened is, the Democratic Party has become a left-wing party. It's also a very devious and deceptive party. So that it will pretend, as it's pretending now, to be bipartisan, to be anti-corruption, to be responsible where the war is concerned. But these people are ideologues, and they
-- the most important thing about the Democratic Party is that it's a party of appeasement and surrender in the war on terror. It has done nothing for the war on terror since 9-11 except to sabotage that war. It's lea -- and we're talking now about its leaders. I'm not talking about marginal leftists in the party, or its new Islamic black Muslim racist, Keith Ellison. I'm talking about the leadership of the party, whether -- it doesn't matter -- whether it's Kerry, or Harry Reid, or Nancy Pelosi.

ANDREWS: David Horowitz, you and Richard Poe in this book, The Shadow Party, make, I think, a striking observation that there is a conscious effort from Democratic Party leaders and some of their big-money supporters, including George Soros, to create a second Watergate that de-legitimizes America's senior leadership, especially the president, and to create a second Vietnam that --

HOROWITZ: Well, yeah --

ANDREWS: -- that drives American support away from an important foreign commitment.

HOROWITZ: Let's remember, this is a Democratic Party that sabotaged the Vietnam War, and by that I mean that they voted to cut off military and economic aid to the South Vietnamese when there were no American troops in South Vietnam, and within four months of the aid cutoff, the communists won in both campaign -- also cut off aid to Cambodia -- that two and a half million people were slaughtered, and those people -- the blood of those people is on the hands of Ted Kennedy, and John Kerry, and Howard Dean, and all the other Democrats who invoke Vietnam now as some kind of a model that we should follow, that is the anti-Vietnam movement. And they are going to try -- they'll do it again here. They're going to start conducting investigations. Republicans never learn. Republicans had 12 years in this Congress; you can't name a single successful Republican congressional investigation that had political consequences. Whereas if you think back to the previous administration, the Reagan administration, look what they did to Reagan; look what they did of course to Nixon, they took him down. There just is no such investigation. It's beyond me why Republicans never learn how to use the political system. For political warfare.

[...]

HOROWITZ: We are under attack. It's being invaded across the Southern border; it's being infiltrated by terrorists; our troops are being killed. Meanwhile, The New York Times continues -- and The Washington Post -- continue to leak national secrets and undermine the troops. Now, what they have done is, today's New York Times and yesterday's Washington Post have leaked the report on the soldiers who are being tried for allegedly committing crimes in Iraq. So that shows you what -- and I hate it when conservatives call these people liberals -- they don't respect civil liberties, due process; they don't respect the due process of those Duke kids. They will protect the identity of this woman who has had three children out of wedlock, had five different men's semen inside her, is a liar who --

ANDREWS: You mean the accuser in the case.

HOROWITZ: [unintelligible] She's black, so she's a protected species for leftists and liberals.
