“Gunny” Bob suggested federal election monitors are targeting “Democrat-run” Denver, suspecting “voter fraud”

Newsradio 850 KOA host “Gunny” Bob Newman asked “liberal” listeners if they are “angry” that election monitors will be “coming ... to monitor Denver's elections” because “they suspect voter fraud in the Democrat-run city.” He did not mention that federal officials also will monitor voting in Adams and Arapahoe counties; the latter is Republican-controlled.

During his November 3 broadcast, Newsradio 850 KOA host “Gunny” Bob Newman asked his “Democrat or otherwise ... liberal” listeners if they “are ... angry, or upset in any way, or disappointed, that federal election officials are coming to Denver to monitor Denver's elections” because “they suspect voter fraud in the Democrat-run city.” But Newman failed to mention that, according to a November 3 Rocky Mountain News article, U.S. Department of Justice [DOJ] employees also will be monitoring elections in numerous other cities and counties across the country -- including Adams and Arapahoe counties in Colorado -- where they “believe problems may be possible.” Newman also failed to note that, according to a spokeswoman for Republican Secretary of State Gigi Dennis, DOJ "[o]fficials did not mention any specific concerns when they spoke to the Colorado Secretary of State's Office" regarding the November 7 election.

Recent news reports have noted that the DOJ will be sending officials to Colorado to monitor polls on Election Day. As the News reported, “The Justice Department is sending a record number of officials to monitor midterm elections across the country. Denver, Adams County and Arapahoe County are among at least 65 cities and counties where DOJ officials believe problems may be possible.” The News also reported that “officials will be watching for violations of federal voting laws, including voter intimidation, voting by ineligible voters, fraudulent vote counting and voting in multiple counties.”

Newman stated:

Oh, by the way, if you are a Democrat or otherwise a liberal, whatever, are you angry, or upset in any way, or disappointed, that federal election officials are coming to Denver to monitor Denver's elections and voting on Tuesday, because they suspect that the -- of, of -- they suspect voter fraud in the Democrat-run city and voting discrepancies? That's why they're sending the team here. Does that bother you?

Newman then stated, “If I was a Democrat and they were coming to my city because they suspect voter fraud and discrepancies, I know I'd be at least -- at least -- disappointed. That's at a minimum.”

Contrary to Newman's suggestion that DOJ officials have targeted Denver because “they suspect voter fraud in the Democrat-run city,” reporting in The Denver Post and the News has given no indication that the DOJ's decision on where to send monitors was based on the political leadership of the selected cities, towns, and counties. As The Denver Post reported on November 3:

Denver is among 65 cities where the U.S. Justice Department will monitor elections Nov. 7.

Wan Kim, assistant attorney general for civil rights, told CNN that close races were a factor in determining where to send the more than 800 monitors.

Denver Election Commission spokesman Alton Dillard said the commission was notified Denver had been selected as a site of potential trouble, but he said he did not know why.

Similarly, the News reported on November 3 that DOJ "[o]fficials did not mention any specific concerns when they spoke to the Colorado Secretary of State's Office, spokeswoman Dana Williams said."

As the News also noted, in addition to Denver, federal officials will monitor elections in Adams County and Arapahoe County; the latter is Republican-controlled. Arapahoe County's five-member Board of County Commissioners has four Republican members and one Democratic member, Frank Weddig, who serves the county's 5th District. Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder Nancy Doty, whose office oversees the election division, is a Republican.

From the November 3 broadcast of Newsradio 850 KOA's The Gunny Bob Show:
