Kari Lake against a red background

Greg Kelly claimed he “can’t find” the Confederate flag at Kari Lake’s campaign event. He was looking at the wrong photo.

Newsmax host Greg Kelly insisted on his show that the “fake news” has published “hundreds and hundreds” of stories about Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake speaking at a campaign event in front of a Confederate battle flag. He then pulled up a photo of Lake at a separate campaign event and claimed that it was the photo used by the media to “smear” Lake.

Lake was recorded speaking in front of a Confederate flag at a campaign event hosted by the Trumped Store in Show Low, Arizona, on May 31.

Kelly showed a photo from a separate campaign event hosted at the Wild Women Saloon hours before Lake’s appearance at the Trumped Store. He emphatically and incorrectly stated, “This picture right here, this event, they said, ‘well, she was somehow endorsing white supremacy’ because somewhere in that room was a Confederate flag. … Hundreds and hundreds of stories about how she was within 100 feet of a Confederate flag that I can’t find in that photograph. That is pretty absurd.”

Ironically, Kelly tried to make his point by scrolling through a portion of the “hundreds and hundreds” of articles, three of which had thumbnails of Lake’s photo in front of a Confederate flag.

(Kelly interviewed Lake later in the episode but didn’t ask her to respond to the “fake news” he had complained about.)

GREG KELLY (HOST): This game they’re playing with culture, with everything, including the flag. You know, Kari Lake — she’s coming on the show later, and I've been thinking about some stuff, and she’s running for the Senate, and she’s all over Arizona going to big events, and, you know, they like her there, and she’s talking about ideas.

It’s pretty amazing though the fake news — this picture right here, this event, they said, ‘well, she was somehow endorsing white supremacy’ because somewhere in that room was a Confederate flag. Somewhere within that room was a Confederate flag. Hundreds and hundreds of stories about how she was within 100 feet of a Confederate flag that I can’t find in that photograph. That is pretty absurd.
