After a caller warned her to “be politically correct” because the “thought police have come to Colorado and are pulling an 'Imus' on 'Gunny' Bob,” 1310 KFKA host Amy Oliver -- in an apparent reference to Colorado Media Matters -- falsely claimed on her May 17 show that the organization's “sole mission is to get rid of conservative talk radio.” However, as explained on its website, "Colorado Media Matters is a Web-based progressive research and information center" whose mission is to monitor, analyze, and correct “conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.”

From the May 17 broadcast of 1310 KFKA's The Amy Oliver Show:

CALLER: At any rate, I was gonna caution you to be politically correct. I don't know if over the last few days you've picked up that the thought police have come to Colorado and are pulling an “Imus” on “Gunny” Bob.

OLIVER: I have heard that and actually that group is targeting -- no, I know exactly what you're doing, or what you're talking about. No, that -- and they are working very hard. Their sole mission is to get rid of conservative talk radio.

CALLER: So --

OLIVER: So, no, you're right, you're right.

CALLER: -- be very careful.

OLIVER: And, and I have been mentioned by that group before as well.

CALLER: Oh, how nice.

OLIVER: Yeah, well --

CALLER: I'm so glad for you.

OLIVER: And actually there's a very funny article. Go to, I think it's the Vail Times or somebody, that says, “Big Brother's watching, how can I get on the list?” [laughter] No, you're absolutely right, you're absolutely right. And, I got to tell you, we've a volatile subject here in Northern Colorado that could get me in some hot water.

CALLER: Oh, my goodness. Heavens to murgatroid, they're, they're going to, to put a patch on your clothes, I guess, huh?

OLIVER: Yeah, exactly. “Politically incorrect.”

CALLER: Oh, Lord.

OLIVER: Hey, [caller], thanks for your phone call. I appreciate the warning.

Oliver and her caller were referring to the controversy surrounding anti-Muslim remarks that Newsradio 850 KOA host “Gunny” Bob Newman made on his May 8 broadcast, though neither Oliver nor her caller described Newman's inflammatory comments or the ensuing public outcry. As Colorado Media Matters noted, Newman was discussing the breakup of an alleged terrorist plot to attack U.S. soldiers at New Jersey's Fort Dix when he demanded that “every Muslim immigrant in America ... be required by law to wear a GPS tracking bracelet at all times.” Newman further suggested that the U.S. government “bug [Muslims'] places of work and their residences,” monitor "[a]ll mosques and community centers," and “throw their asses out of the country” if they object.

After Colorado Media Matters reported Newman's remarks on May 9, several organizations -- including the American Friends Service Committee, the Mountain States chapter of the Anti-Defamation League, and the Colorado chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union -- issued statements condemning the comments. The progressive organization ProgressNow launched a public action campaign to raise awareness of Newman's remarks among advertisers and by May 18, three advertisers had asked to have their ads removed from Newman's show.

As Oliver noted, Colorado Media Matters has pointed out numerous instances in which Oliver has dispensed false or misleading information on her radio show, including:

• On her March 6 broadcast, Oliver repeated a conservative talking point by suggesting that cold weather in one particular geographic locale, over a specified period of time, tends to contradict the reality that global temperatures are rising. In fact, as Colorado Media Matters has noted repeatedly (here, here, here, here, and here), pointing to any sporadic regional weather event as “evidence” that disproves global warming is both simplistic and misleading.

• Oliver repeated racist commentary about Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (IL) on her April 11 broadcast, stating that Obama “is not 100 percent black. He is half-black, half-white.” In focusing on Obama's racial identity, Oliver echoed a pattern of racist conservative commentary that Media Matters for America has documented.

• During the April 25 broadcast of her show, Oliver allowed U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-CO) to mischaracterize a Democratic-sponsored Iraq spending bill that President Bush has promised to veto. Allard baselessly accused Democrats of “delay[ing]” funding for the troops and “unnecessarily putting at risk the lives of our men and women in the armed forces.” However, Congress took considerably longer to act on Bush's funding request for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2006 when the Republican Party was in control.

Colorado Media Matters editorial director Bill Menezes has also appeared as a guest on Oliver's show on at least three occasions.
