Right-wing media are hopping mad about an Easter bunny talking to Biden

Written by Julie Tulbert

Leave it up to right-wing media to go down a rabbit hole when it comes to the White House’s annual Easter egg roll.

During the event on Monday, President Joe Biden was speaking on the rope line to guests and press when a bunny, or rather White House Director of Message Planning Meghan Hayes dressed as a bunny, came up to him wildly waving their arms.

It wasn’t a hare-raising situation at all; Hayes was merely directing Biden to another activity.

But, predictably, some in right-wing media kicked up a storm, labeling the incident “bunnygate" and claiming it was “one of the saddest moments" they had seen during Biden's presidency, and somehow proved he “is not up to the job of being president." Some bunny should tell them not everything is proof that Biden isn’t in control of the White House.

SEAN HANNITY (HOST): Now, the biggest lie from this White House is hiding right in plain sight. Joe Biden, your president, is not up to the job of being president. He is so obviously struggling cognitively, but the administration — they're pretending like all is well. Well, all is not well, and today, a White House staffer dressed up — I wonder who got this job as a — as the Easter Bunny, blocking the president from answering questions about foreign policy, things that actually matter.

TUCKER CARLSON (HOST): Yesterday, for example, Biden was fumbling through questions about foreign policy when a staffer in an Easter Bunny costume appeared out of nowhere and led him away. It's that bad now. How bad is it? Here is Biden in one of the saddest moments of his or any other presidency.

…

Shaking imaginary hands, wandering off into the great distance. So the one thing we can say with certainty about the White House in the spring of 2022 is that Joe Biden is not running it. Joe Biden is gone.

GREG GUTFELD (CO-HOST): We do know that he's not running the show. He just shows that —

JEANINE PIRRO (CO-HOST): Who do you think is running the show?

GUTFELD: I don't know. But you know, I can't believe it's him because he seems so out of it all the time. I don't have — I don't think he makes decisions.

SEAN DUFFY (CO-HOST): He doesn't.

GUTFELD: I think he gets up. He sits down, he enjoys wearing the jacket and the sunglasses, but it's got to be the chief of staff.

CHRISTOPHER BEDFORD (SENIOR EDITOR, THE FEDERALIST): It’s been really clear now for about a year that the president is being very closely handled, where he’s allowed to stand, what he’s allowed to say. My question is, who’s in charge of this? Because he’s supposed to be the elected leader of our people. Someone's pulling his strings.

STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): Bunnygate.

ALEXANDRIA HOFF (FOX NEWS CORRESPONDENT): Bunnygate is right. And first I will say yesterday while it was cold, it was rainy, it really was a welcome return to a very long-standing tradition here at the White House. The Easter egg roll had not been in person in two years. But it does seem that in that time the Easter bunny has gained some authority. It was an interesting moment. The president was greeting reporters and visitors and at that point the fluffy character physically stopped the president from answering a question about Afghanistan.

…

BRIAN KILMEADE (CO-HOST): How embarrassing is that? And for him to listen — for him not to say, ‘Hey, let me at least finish the sentence.’ And say, ‘OK, fun day, I will catch up to you guys later.’ Instead, turns around like a robot and just pushes away. I mean, who is in control here? My goodness. You allow that to happen?

RedState:

Is the White House so paranoid about Biden speaking to the press that it used the tradition of an administration official dressing up as the Easter Bunny to keep him in line? The answer to that question appears to be yes. … It’s really weird for the bunny to be babysitting the president during the egg roll.

Yes, yet again, the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House was an opportunity for Joe Biden to demonstrate why he shouldn’t be president.

Daily Wire:

Readers should keep in mind that Biden has a penchant for refusing to take certain actions by claiming an anonymous group of people known only as “they” will not let him.
