Fox News contributor and former acting ICE director speaks to anti-immigrant hate group

Fox News contributor Tom Homan -- who previously served as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement — gave a keynote speech at an event hosted by an anti-immigrant hate group. 

The event was held on February 8 in Atlanta and hosted by the Georgia-based Dustin Inman Society, which the Southern Poverty Law Center classifies “as an anti-immigrant hate group because it denigrates immigrants and supports efforts to make the lives of immigrants so hard that they leave on their own.”

The group, named for a teen boy killed in a car accident involving an undocumented immigrant in the year 2000, has had a long history of vilifying undocumented immigrants under the guise of stopping crime. As the SPLC notes, the group’s founder D.A. King regularly refers to “criminal illegal aliens” as “crimigrants” and accepted a $5,000 grant from white nationalist and anti-immigration crusader John Tanton — a man he considered a “personal friend and a personal hero.” King has also written for VDare, a white nationalist hate website.

The event featuring Homan, titled “Honoring Immigrants: An Expert, Pro-Enforcement Conversation on Immigration,” was attended by Georgia congressional candidate Mark Gonsalves. In his tweet about the event, Gonsalves claimed that “no sovereign nation can remain sovereign absent secure borders.”

Homan reportedly spoke about Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp’s supposed failure to keep campaign promises on immigration. According to Kemp’s campaign website, he ran on hard-line policies that would “crackdown on illegal immigration.” But after he won the governorship, he chose to shut down a controversial immigration review board, which often fielded complaints from the Dustin Inman Society. 

The former acting ICE director has also appeared on Fox News multiple times in recent months, primarily to smear undocumented immigrants. In January, for instance, Homan falsely suggested that undocumented people are more likely than citizens to be rapists and murderers. He also used misleading statistics about human smuggling and fake families to justify the Trump administration’s family separation policy. 

Homan is “a major source of immigration misinformation at Fox.” Under his leadership, ICE repeatedly and wrongfully accused immigrants of gang membership to serve as justification for their arrests.
