Right-wing media’s scattered responses to Viktor Orbán's loss in Hungary

Right-wing media are struggling to reach a consensus about Viktor Orbán’s loss to Peter Magyar in Hungary’s general election on April 12. Some figures have called it a “major loss” for conservatives while others tried to find positive things to say about the results.

During his 16 years in power, Orbán became a close ally of President Donald Trump, his administration, and conservative media in the United States, specifically former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Just before Orbán’s loss, Vice President JD Vance even traveled to Budapest for a campaign appearance with Orbán, at an event where some attendees were reportedly “wearing red MAGA hats.” Magyar told reporters this week that Orbán had “diverted Hungarian taxpayer funds toward financing” the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Orbán has been praised by right-wing media figures for his hard-line stance on immigration and his crackdown on freedom of the press, so his ouster has been a point of discussion this week among conservative pundits. Podcaster Glenn Beck claimed that the Trump administration needs to see Orbán’s loss as a lesson and that they should be working harder to “drain the swamp” in D.C. Fox News' Brian Kilmeade said he was “glad” Orbán lost because of his close ties to Putin. Daily Wire hosts Michael Knowles and Ben Shapiro were split on the issue — Knowles argued Orbán's loss was a “loss for conservatives” while Shapiro claimed it was not a “switch away from conservatism” for Hungary.

  • Charlie Kirk Show producer and co-host Blake Neff said about Orbán's loss: “A lot of bad stuff might be about to happen in Hungary.” Neff claimed a post by former President Barack Obama celebrating the results is “proof that it's a bad sign.” [Real America's Voice, The Charlie Kirk Show, 4/14/26]
  • Podcaster Dave Rubin praised Orbán, saying, “He is no longer the prime minister of Hungary after a 16-year run where he closed his borders, fought the EU. They quite literally had no Islamic terrorist attacks in 16 years. Not one illegal came through their borders.” Rubin said about Magyar: “That really is the problem that he likely, by playing ball with the European Union on things like immigration, most likely ends up opening their borders, right?” [YouTube, The Rubin Report, 4/13/26]
  • Daily Wire host Ben Shapiro seemingly pushed back against the idea that Magyar is liberal and claimed, “Is this a wild switch away from conservatism in Hungary? It seems like not.” [The Daily Wire, The Ben Shapiro Show, 4/13/26]
  • Former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani praised Orbán, claiming that he “rendered Hungary free of any of the Islamic problems that beset England, France, Germany, Italy, because he basically lets them in sparingly, if at all.” Giuliani then claimed that by voting him out of office, Hungary was about to “jump on the sinking ship" of the European Union. [Rumble, America’s Mayor Live, 4/13/26]
  • The Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles claimed that anyone arguing “we shouldn't be upset about losing Orbán” is wrong because people like Hillary Clinton, Alex Soros, Gavin Newsom, and other Democrats are celebrating his loss, saying, “This is a loss for conservatives, major loss.” Knowles later said, “I hope that this guy, Peter Magyar in Hungary, can resist Brussels. But if I were a gambling man, I would say probably not.” [The Daily Wire, The Michael Knowles Show, 4/13/26]
  • In a conversation between Fox host Brian Kilmeade and Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts, Kilmeade said, “I'm glad Viktor Orbán lost. I love what he did on immigration. It was smart. But in terms of giving his economy over to China and kissing up to Russia, I could do without that.” Roberts responded, “I definitely don't like the Russia part, between Orbán and Putin,” then added that “all of that to say on Mr. Orbán, it's proof that in a democratic republic, when you've been in power for sixteen years, even the most popular populist can fall out of favor.” [Fox News Radio, Brian Kilmeade Show, 4/13/26]
  • Podcast host Steven Crowder argued Magyar will be further right than Orbán, saying, “Anyone saying this signals that this whole sort of nationalist, that this Christian conservative, this culturally Christian movement is dying — this signals the exact opposite of that.” [Rumble, Louder with Crowder, 4/13/26]
  • Infowars’ Rob Dew: “I predicted a few days ago that they're just going to open up to mass migration. And of course, their new leader is like, well, we're not going to open it up totally yet, but we're going to leave our fence up. That doesn't mean anything. I mean, I think it's in. The jig is up for Hungary.” [Infowars, War Room, 4/14/26]
  • Timcast IRL co-host Tate Brown tried to save face for Trump and claimed the president “knew Orbán was going to lose. … I mean, it was kind of obvious.” [YouTube, Timcast IRL, 4/15/26]
  • The Gateway Pundit published an article calling Orbán's defeat “HORRIBLE NEWS” which claimed, “Conservatives around the world are saddened by the crushing electoral defeat sustained by right-wing hero, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.” [The Gateway Pundit, 4/12/26]
