During “The People vs. Poison,” an April 27 D.C. rally organized by activists calling attention to what they say are major health risks associated with Bayer’s glyphosate-based Roundup herbicide, a handful of advocates and influencers in the “Make America Healthy Again” movement blamed the Trump administration for its role in shielding Bayer from liability in thousands of lawsuits alleging its product is not safe for humans — reflecting growing frustration among some MAHA figures over the administration’s glyphosate policy.

In February, Trump issued an executive order declaring glyphosate critical to national security, and in March the administration filed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to rule in favor of Roundup’s developer, which was acquired by Bayer in 2018, in the much-anticipated case Monsanto Company v. Durnell. The moves were emblematic of the Trump White House’s cozy relationship with the agrochemical industry and its multipronged effort to protect industry giants like Bayer, which have angered key MAHA figures and mobilized them to take action.

While People vs. Poison organizer Vani Hari, a MAHA activist known as the Food Babe, said the event would be the “largest food movement rally America has ever seen,” Civil Eats reported “only about 100 to 150 people attended,” although “the small crowd did receive an oversized media welcome.”

MAHA-affiliated organizations MAHA Action and Children’s Health Defense livestreamed the event, which was held outside of the Supreme Court as Monsanto v. Durnell was being argued inside. In addition to hosting MAHA-affiliated organizations like Moms Across America, the rally also featured speakers from progressive organizations such as the Center for Biological Diversity and Friends of the Earth, “and lawmakers including Democratic Representative Chellie Pingree of Maine and Democratic Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey.”

Among over two dozen speakers at the event, several figures in the MAHA space that helped elevate Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and boost Trump’s 2024 campaign directly called out the administration over the issue of glyphosate. Here’s what they said:

  • During her opening speech, Hari said, “Let’s be honest — we wouldn’t be here right now if President Trump didn’t sign that executive order. We wouldn’t be here right now if they weren’t inside this building arguing on Monsanto’s behalf.” Hari, who has over 2 million followers on Instagram, continued: “We wouldn’t be here right now if they didn’t submit that amicus brief and that recommendation to the Supreme Court to look at this case when they’ve lost all over this country. You cannot stand with families and do that.” [Instagram, 4/27/26, accessed 4/29/26]
  • The HighWire host Del Bigtree told Trump, “You got this one wrong.” Bigtree, who has nearly 150,000 followers on Instagram, told attendees, “When Donald Trump sends the Department of Justice to defend corporations against the will of the people, against the health of the people, we need to stand up and say this is not making America healthy again.” [Instagram, 4/27/26, accessed 4/29/26]
  • Former Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), who was RFK Jr.’s presidential campaign manager before being replaced in late 2023, said, “What Monsanto is trying to do, with the help of the Justice Department and the Trump administration, is to give a special corporate carve-out” that could decide “whether or not states have a fundamental right to be able to stand up for the health and safety of their people.” If the court rules in favor of Bayer and Monsanto, he warned, “they will have taken down a cornerstone of our country.” Speaking to Salon last month, Kucinich argued that “MAHA is evolving as a political movement … that goes beyond who the president is.” [Instagram, 4/27/26; The New York Times, 10/16/23; Salon, 3/7/26]
  • Influencer Kelly Ryerson, who is also known as Glyphosate Girl and has more than 100,000 Instagram followers, said “the White House has told us to look the other way” because “the ongoing poisoning of our loved ones is somehow necessary for national security.” Ryerson added, “A government that shields corporations from the public does not serve the people — it is captured.” The day after the rally, Ryerson appeared on Fox & Friends First and told host Todd Piro that Trump’s actions “might cost the midterms for the Republican Party.” She warned, “This was an enormous political misstep, in terms of what the administration did, to have a real slap in the face to MAHA. Glyphosate is a banner issue for MAHA.” [YouTube, 4/27/26; Instagram, accessed 4/29/26; Fox News, Fox & Friends First, 4/28/26]
  • Moms Across America founder Zen Honeycutt said, “For 14 years, I have dedicated my life to getting glyphosate banned … and Bayer thinks that because this administration has given them the nod that they're going to win.” Honeycutt previously said Trump’s glyphosate executive order “made me sick to my stomach,” calling it “outrageous,” and said it was “an F-you to the MAHA movement.” [YouTube, 4/27/26; Media Matters, 3/30/26]

During the 2024 election cycle, voters in the so-called MAHA coalition became a key component of Trump’s base — his campaign and its surrogates made many promises to win over Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s MAHA supporters, including Trump’s claim that “we’re going to get toxic chemicals out of our environment, and we're going to get them out of our food supply.”

Yet, when asked at the April 27 rally whether the GOP will remain aligned with MAHA going forward, Turning Point USA’s Alex Clark warned, “I don’t think that the entire Republican Party is on board with that — and that is a costly mistake.”

On Thursday, April 30, Clark and others who attended the rally declared victory when the House of Representatives voted to strip the newly passed farm bill of language that, according to CNBC, “would have prohibited any states and courts from penalizing or holding ‘liable any entity for failing to comply with requirements that would require labeling or packaging that is in addition to or different from the labeling or packaging approved by the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.’”
