EPA chief Scott Pruitt cites NY Times' Bret Stephens to defend his climate denial
This is why Bret Stephens’ climate denial is dangerous
From the White House’s June 2 press briefing:
SCOTT PRUITT (EPA ADMINISTRATOR): Does [climate change] pose an existential threat as some say? People have called me a climate skeptic or a climate denier. I don’t know what it means to deny the climate. I would say there are climate exaggerators. In fact, many of you, I don’t know if you saw this article or not, but the "Climate of Complete Certainty” by Bret Stephens that was in The New York Times talked about -- and I’ll just read a quote, because I thought it was a very important quote from this article. “Anyone who has read the 2014 report of the IPCC knows that, while the modest 0.85 degrees Celsius warming of the earth that has occured since 1880, much else that passes as accepted fact is really a matter of probabilities. That’s especially true of the sophisticated but fallible models and simulations by which scientists attempt to peer into the climate future. To say this isn’t to deny science. Isn’t (sic) to acknowledge it honestly.” And I think that -- what the debate -- what the American people deserve is a debate, objective, transparent discussion about this issue.
From Stephens’ column:
Anyone who has read the 2014 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change knows that, while the modest (0.85 degrees Celsius, or about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit) warming of the earth since 1880 is indisputable, as is the human influence on that warming, much else that passes as accepted fact is really a matter of probabilities. That’s especially true of the sophisticated but fallible models and simulations by which scientists attempt to peer into the climate future. To say this isn’t to deny science. It’s to acknowledge it honestly.
