JOHN PAUL (WSBT 22 ANCHOR): While AAA reports an average of $4.42 a gallon in Indiana and $4.58 in Michigan for regular unleaded, we've seen prices as high as $5 a gallon. WSBT 22's Francesca Onofrio is working the story from the live desk here at 5. Francesca, drivers are feeling the impact and shared their frustrations with you.
FRANCESCA ONOFRIO (WSBT 22 REPORTER): JP, many are worrying about how they will adjust their budget just to buy gas. Take a look.
GARY KOONTZ (DRIVER): It's amazing to me that it's gonna be an extra, you know, $30, $40 a week from people, especially going to work. So, you know, that that means they're going to have to not spend on something else.
...
ONOFRIO: WSBT 22 asked an IU South Bend economics professor when we could potentially see gas prices drop, and unfortunately, it's not the answer many of us want to hear.
KLAJDI BREGU (IUSB ECONOMIC PROFESSOR): So the best case scenario is that the war ends and we'll see some relief. The thing to keep in mind is that from what has happened so far, it's unlikely we'll see prices that we had pre-war anytime soon, maybe next year.
...
ALDO JOHNSON (DRIVER): So I thought, you know, I'm down to a quarter tank, it's time to fill up. And I came down here because they always have a good price on gas here. But at $5 a gallon, I about wilted like an old flower. It's bad. And it's unfortunate.
ONOFRIO: With many others feeling the same way.
BILL YAKIM (DRIVER): I just retired this year, I was hoping to do some traveling, but we're canceling it. We're not doing nothing.
ONOFRIO: Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you'll be getting a break at the pumps anytime soon.
