chyron reads, "WHY THE RUSH TO SEND $40 BILLION TO UKRAINE?"

Right-wing media melt down over the United States sending aid to Ukraine

Fox News hosts and other right-wing media figures are complaining about the $39.8 billion bipartisan bill that would aid Ukraine as it fights against the Russian invasion. The bill -- which includes funds for humanitarian, economic, and defense needs in the country -- passed in the House earlier this week and is now being delayed in the Senate due to opposition from Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).

The Ukrainian people are in desperate need of aid during this time of crisis. The Associated Press and PBS have a current count of 239 potential war crimes, including the targeting of unarmed civilians, medical facilities, and schools. CBS News reports that Ukrainians are starving due to Russians blocking food deliveries, and nearly 100 children were killed in the country just during April.

Yet right-wing media figures have been criticizing the bill and attacking Republicans who support it. Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson, and Jesse Watters are among those at Fox who criticized the Republicans supporting it, with Carlson going so far as to call for primary challengers against such Republicans. On his podcast War Room: Pandemic, former Trump aide Steve Bannon praised Paul for blocking the bill, saying it was not “in the vital national security interest of the United States.” Multiple hosts at One America News Network decried the bill, with The Tipping Point’s Kara McKinney claiming the aid would “disappear into the hands of corrupt officials.”

Ingraham called aid to Ukraine “a complete outrage.” During the May 12 edition of her Fox show, The Ingraham Angle, Ingraham discussed the rise in inflation impacting American families and claimed the “Biden brigade” is more interested in helping Ukrainians than Americans. [Fox News, The Ingraham Angle, 5/12/22]

Carlson lashed out at Republicans supporting aid to Ukraine and called for primary challengers against them. Carlson said, “You got to hope that there's some sincere billionaire out there who's going to fund a primary challenge against every single one of those Republican senators” who are supporting the $40 billion Ukraine spending bill. [Fox News, Tucker Carlson Tonight, 5/12/22]

Watters claimed that the Biden administration is more focused on “feeding the Ukrainian war machine” than feeding American babies. When speaking on the Biden Administration’s response to the recent baby formula shortage, Watters used aid to Ukraine and feeding of detained immigrant children at the border as examples of Biden’s misplaced priorities. [Fox News, The Five, 5/12/22; New York Times, 5/13/22]

Watters asserted that by sending aid to Ukraine, Washington is “proving once again that they could not care less about your problems.” Watters claimed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) comments on the funding for Ukraine were like a “giant slap in the face to millions of Americans when our politicians are more focused on feeding weapons across the world than they are with feeding our own babies here at home.” [Fox News, Jesse Watters Primetime, 5/11/22]

Bannon applauded Paul for delaying Senate vote on aid to Ukraine and claimed the spending bill is not “in the vital national security interest of the United States.” During the May 12 edition of War Room: Pandemic, Bannon claimed the money sent to Ukraine would be “stolen by the oligarchs over there.” [War Room: Pandemic, 5/12/22]

On War Room: Battleground, Missouri gubernatorial candidate Eric Greitens described the $40 billion aid package to Ukraine as a “stab” of the “American people in the back.” During the May 12 edition of War Room: Battleground, Bannon’s new show, Greitens railed against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for supporting aid to Ukraine, claiming that focus should instead be on the American southern border and sending support to Europe is “continuing to stab the American people in the back.”  [War Room: Battleground, 5/12/22]

On OAN’s Real America, host Dan Ball complained about the various “mounting crises at home” while discussing aid to Ukraine with The Blaze’s Daniel Horowitz. Ball implied there are too many crises in America to be sending money to Ukraine and claimed both Republicans and Democrats are “being paid to push war.” [OAN, Real America, 5/12/22]

Right-wing site The Blaze published an article titled “If only Republicans loved America as much as they love Ukraine,” in which Senior Editor Daniel Horowitz argued Republican leaders should be focused on inflation instead of Ukraine aid. While railing against Republicans who support the aid bill, Horowitz wrote, “Perhaps we can all self-identify as Ukrainians, and our Republican politicians will pay attention to those who’ve had their lives destroyed by Pfizer’s experimental gene therapy.” [The Blaze, 5/11/22]

Conspiracy theorist website Revolver published an article with the headline “Why Funding Ukraine Is Just Dead Wrong.” The article claimed “Americans are paying $40 billion for the ‘privilege’ of raising our exposure to nuclear war, and condemning Ukraine to endless war.” The article was tweeted by Rep. Matt Gaetz, who called it a “must read.” [Revolver, 5/12/22; Twitter, 5/13/22]

OAN’s The Tipping Point host Kara McKinney claimed the aid to Ukraine “comes in a time in which Americans can literally not afford it.” After quoting a recent floor speech by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), McKinney claimed the money sent to Ukraine will “disappear into the hands of corrupt officials.” [OAN, The Tipping Point, 5/11/22]

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on Democrats trying to advance an aid package to Ukraine: “These people hate you.” On May 10, Kirk tweeted that Democrats “hate you and they don't care that you're suffering under their regime” because the U.S. is sending aid to Ukraine while there is a baby formula shortage. [Twitter, 5/10/22]

Extremist radio host Pete Santilli described the aid package to Ukraine as a “money laundering bill.” Santilli uploaded a video to Rumble on May 11 with the title “Pelosi Passes $40 Billion Ukraine Money Laundering Bill.” [Rumble, 5/11/22]

The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh on Democrats trying to pass an aid package to Ukraine: “These people are simply just evil. Traitors. They hate this country and they hate you.” On May 11, Walsh complained on Twitter that because the United States is “ravaged by inflation,” Democrats are “simply just evil” and are “traitors” for sending a funding package to Ukraine. [Twitter, 5/11/22]

The Infowars’ Telegram account described sending aid to Ukraine as “Globalists trying to sink America for good.” On May 13, the Infowars Telegram account shared an article about Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) blocking $40 billion in aid to Ukraine. The account described sending aid to Ukraine as “Globalists trying to sink America for good.” [Telegram, 5/13/22]
