BRET BAIER (HOST): What about the trickle from Republicans kind of condemning these remarks? Definitely wasn't an avalanche. 

BRIT HUME: Well-- It wasn't an avalanche. You ought to look where these people are from. Republicans are running into constituencies where Donald Trump's remarks will go over badly and it's bad politics to associate yourself with them or in some cases to refuse to disassociate yourself with them. So I think that's where we are, but I think this contributes badly, Bret, the whole episode to this terrible development in our country, where the great achievement of the Civil Rights movement, perhaps the greatest achievement was the national consensus against racism. And when the word is flung about with abandon and the way it is now, it is really quite a terrible thing to say about somebody, it loses its meaning and it becomes not a matter of American unification around the idea there should be no racism, it becomes a matter of division.
