Fox's Stuart Varney cites falsely attributed Winston Churchill quote to attack socialism

On the July 26 edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends, Fox Business host and “refugee from socialism” Stuart Varney said, “'If you're not a socialist by the age of 25, you've got no heart. If you're still a socialist after 25, you've got no head.' Who said that? Winston Churchill said that.”

Except, Winston Churchill did not say that or any other version of that. According to the International Churchill Society, an organization dedicated to preserving the history of the former British prime minister, “There is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this.” Paul Addison, a professor and historian of World War II-era British politics, has said, “Surely Churchill can’t have used the words attributed to him. He’d been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35!”

Fox Business’ resident “refugee” has a long history of often absurd attacks on things he calls socialism. Varney repeatedly called former President Barack Obama a socialist, and when “neo-socialist” Pope Francis criticized offshore tax havens, Varney said that Francis made “authoritarian socialism ... part of Catholic doctrine.” In the present day, Varney’s phobia mostly manifests in wails that “socialism is back,” attacks on Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and using public protests against Trump policies and appointees as evidence that the Democrats are “moving further down the dead-end street called socialism.”
