Right-Wing Radio Host Howie Carr Defends Trump Immigration Plan With 30 Minutes Of Racism

Boston Herald columnist and syndicated radio host Howie Carr spent the first 30 minutes of his August 31 radio show using anti-Mexican, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim rhetoric to defend Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s trip to Mexico and his proposed immigration policies. Carr, who has backed Trump throughout his campaign, also used anti-immigrant slurs such as “illegal alien” and “anchor baby” and said Mexican immigrants are “undesirables” who don’t work.

Trump Offers Vastly Different Immigration Stances In His Immigration And Mexico Speeches

AP: Trump Campaign Has A Day Of “Political Whiplash” On Immigration. The Associated Press reported on September 1 that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign served up an “astounding” amount of “political whiplash” that reflected “the tortured debate between Trump and his advisers over how to position the unconventional candidate in the general election.” Trump “appeared on the brink” of a softer immigration tone in his meeting with Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto, but “wiped it all away” at a speech later in Arizona:

For weeks, Donald Trump flirted with a self-described “softening” of the hard-line immigration policies that propelled him to the Republican nomination, raising the hopes of party officials, some Hispanic leaders and skeptical voters unnerved by his presidential candidacy.

On Wednesday, he appeared on the brink of embracing that shift as he traveled to Mexico for a dramatic visit with President Enrique Pena Nieto. Against the backdrop of grand diplomatic pageantry, Trump lavished praise on America's southern neighbor and pointedly avoided insisting publicly that Mexico pay for the wall he's pledged to build along the U.S.-Mexico border.

He was measured and soft-spoken, almost deferential as he read carefully off prepared notes.

Within hours, Trump wiped it all away.

Even for Trump — who has made an art of straddling both sides of an issue and playing to the preferences of the audience he's standing before — the political whiplash was astounding. It reflected the tortured debate between Trump and his advisers over how to position the unconventional candidate in the general election — a debate that rages on, even with just over two months until Election Day. Howie Carr Uses Anti-Mexican And Anti-Immigrant Language To Defend Trump’s Immigration Stance

Carr: Former President Of Mexico Should “Look On The Bright Side” Because Trump Did Not “Drop An Anchor Baby” During Visit. New England radio host and Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr asked how former president of Mexico Vicente Fox, who criticized Trump’s August 31 visit, might feel having “someone you don’t want in your country coming in” and said Fox should “look on the bright side” because Trump didn’t stop “at the welfare office” or “drop an anchor baby.” From the August 31 edition of WRKO’s The Howie Carr Show:

HOWIE CARR (HOST): Hey Señor [Vicente] Fox, how does it feel to have someone you don’t want in your country coming in? You’re outraged by Trump’s temporary visit? How do you think all of us feel -- here in the United States of America -- feel about the millions upon millions of illegal aliens who come into the country and commit crimes? Yes, they do commit crimes. They don’t want to talk -- nobody wants to talk about that, but the reality is people who sneak into the country are criminals and they tend to commit a disproportionate number of crimes here in the United States of America. Look on the bright side, Señor Fox, at least his first stop isn’t going to be at the welfare office. He’s not going to drop an anchor baby. [WRKO, The Howie Carr Show, 8/31/16]

Carr: America Needs Trump’s Mexican Border Wall “To Keep The Barbarians Out.” Carr compared Trump’s plan to build a border wall along the United States-Mexico border to the walls ancient Constantinople built. “Nobody ever got into Constantinople,” Carr said, “And dare I say it, we need walls to keep the barbarians out, just like all the other civilizations before us.” From the August 31 edition of WRKO’s The Howie Carr Show:

HOWIE CARR (HOST): The Huns were on their way to Constantinople. Do you know how long it took them to rebuild the wall in Constantinople with Attila the Hun bearing down on Constantinople? It took them 60 days.

[...]

They got the walls built and the Huns didn’t get in. The Avars didn’t get in. The Arabs didn’t get in. Some group called Rus’ [Khaganate] didn’t get it in. I guess they were Russians or the forerunners of Russians. The Bulgars didn’t get in. Until they got gunpowder, the Arabs, back in the 15th century, nobody ever got into Constantinople. We need walls. We need walls. And dare I say it, we need walls to keep the barbarians out, just like all the other civilizations before us. We need walls to keep America, America. We need to make America first again. [WRKO, The Howie Carr Show, 8/31/16]

Carr: Mexico Is Sending “Undesirables” Who “Can’t Cut It In Modern Society” To America.  Carr told a caller that Mexico is “trying to export their underclass” and send its “undesirables” to the United States. Carr said Mexico is using the United States to get rid of people “who aren’t working and who are causing trouble and who just can’t cut it in a modern society.” From the August 31 edition of WRKO’s The Howie Carr Show:

HOWIE CARR (HOST): They’re [the Mexican government] trying to export their underclass. You know, these people, they’re undesirables. They want to get them out of the country. I mean, it would be nice if the United States could somehow find another country that was willing to accept all the people in this country who aren’t working and who are causing trouble and who just can’t cut it in a modern society. But we can’t find anywhere to dump or to encourage our undesirables, shall we say, to go to. But Mexico can. They’re just exporting them to the United States. Mexico is becoming a better country for getting rid of all these people. [WRKO, The Howie Carr Show, 8/31/16]

Carr Asks Caller If He Thought About Changing Name To “Muhammad” Or “Miguel” To Execute Food Stamp Fraud. Carr told a caller he would “have a better shot” at fraudulently receiving food stamps if he changed his name to “Muhammed” or “Miguel.” From the August 31 edition of WRKO’s The Howie Carr Show:

CALLER: Can I get in on some of that food stamp fraud? I need some of that. Can you help me out with that?

HOWIE CARR (HOST): If your name’s Mike, I don’t think you have too much of a chance. You ever think about changing your name to Muhammed? Then you’d have a better shot.

CALLER: No, Miguel. Me llamo Miguel.

CARR: There are a couple Miguels in the group. So you might have a shot. [WRKO, The Howie Carr Show, 8/31/16]

Carr: Mexicans Immigrants From “Lawless” Areas Where “Nobody Worked” Moved To The United States And Are Causing This “Terrible Societal Problem.” Carr told a caller that the United States has a “terrible societal problem” because immigrants from “lawless” parts of Mexico where “nobody worked” are being supported by the United States. Carr also said he wants “to be treated like an illegal alien” because “they are treated better in this country than U.S. citizens are.” From the August 31 edition of WRKO’s The Howie Carr Show:

HOWIE CARR (HOST): I would assume that in some parts of Mexico there are these areas that were once lawless and nobody worked and it’s just a bad area. Now they’re empty. Those areas, all those people have moved to the United States of America, and we’re supporting them now. And we have this terrible crime problem and we have this terrible societal problem. So it’s a great system for them. They get rid of all their undesirables and we get destabilized.

[...]

I’m tired of it. I really am. And again, I don’t want equal rights. I don’t want any special rights as a U.S. citizen, I just want to be treated like an illegal alien. I’ve said that a million times, but it’s true. It’s absolutely true. Illegal aliens are treated better in this country than U.S. citizens are. [WRKO, The Howie Carr Show, 8/31/16]

Howie Carr Has Been Promoting Trump Throughout The Campaign

Carr Vacationed And Golfed With Trump At Trump's Mar-a-Largo-Club Resort In Palm Beach, FL. In an article published on HowieCarr.com, the radio host bragged about playing golf with Trump and the Secret Service while staying at Trump's Mar-a-Largo Club Resort in Palm Beach, FL:

Here's what I saw yesterday with my own eyes - Donald Trump, with his wife, Melania. It was at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach. He was getting ready to fly to Nashua for the speech last night, and she was getting ready to go to the beach.

I mention this only to set up a question: When was the last time you ever saw Mr. and Mrs. William Jefferson Clinton together? Maybe at his second inauguration... in 1997?

[...]

So I'm in Palm Beach on vacation yesterday with my wife, and Newsmax publisher Chris Ruddy, and best-selling author (and ex-Herald reporter) Ron Kessler and his wife, and Trump comes down to see us before he leaves. As the frontrunner, he's got Secret Service protection now. He's living the dream.

“It's great, you don't have to small talk these guys with 'how's the weather?' I tried it a couple of days, then I realized they don't care, they're just here to make sure nothing happens. It's great when you're playing golf. You make a bad shot, they don't see anything, they're too busy scanning the woods, looking for bad guys.”

[...]

Finally Trump stood up. The Secret Service guy started talking into his coat lapel. One of Trump's aides handed him some ties for the Nashua speech.

“Soon,” he said, making a magnanimous motion with his hand, “we will all be in the White House together.” [HowieCarr.com, 12/29/16]
