Leader of constitutional sheriffs group: “I don't blame Trump for not following the Constitution to the letter because he has no Congress that he can rely on or trust”

As Media Matters previously reported last October about Richard Mack, leader of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association:

Mack is a former Arizona county sheriff and the founder of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, an organization which subscribes to the ideology that sheriffs “should be the ultimate law enforcement authority in the U.S.” The organization claims that sheriffs have the “Constitutional authority to check and balance all levels of government,” superseding “any agent, officer, elected official or employee from any level of government when in the jurisdiction of the county.” Constitutional scholars and other experts dispute this assertion, with some noting that the Constitution doesn’t mention sheriffs at all.

Mack and CSPOA have pushed for sheriffs to get involved with mass deportation efforts, even holding the organization’s November national conference in Washington state in part because its attorney general is suing a sheriff for aiding the Trump administration’s deportation efforts. Mack also said he has been talking to Homan about “getting sheriffs involved in deportation.”

RICHARD MACK (FOUNDER, CONSTITUTIONAL SHERIFFS AND PEACE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION): I think he’s always having to play defense, except maybe with the Iran war. Obviously, he took that offensive approach. And even on that, the Democrats and some Republicans have gone after him. And I don't blame Trump for not following the Constitution to the letter because he has no Congress that he can rely on or trust.

KELLY JOHN WALKER (HOST): Yeah.

MACK: He cannot. And so if he had gone to them before he invaded Iran, there's lots of Democrats in there that would have informed Iran.

WALKER: Yeah.

MACK: And it would have cost the lives of a lot of people and maybe even cost the entire operation. And when you have an enemy Congress like that, that obviously are traitors to America. And I'm not talking about, not, oh if they don't go along with Trump, then they're traitors. No. That's not what I'm talking about. This is far beyond just not going along, or going against the president. It's far beyond that. They will do anything, including compromise the safety and security of Americans.

...

This is obvious that they are enemy and they bring in enemy combatants so they're the same as. They're the ones who brought in terrorists. They're the ones that brought in the cartels and that's the most dangerous situation in American history right now what they have done.
