A con artist claimed to have cured cancer with an electric “zapper.” Businesses are now selling her bogus technology to treat the coronavirus.

Hulda Clark was a medical fraudster who invented bogus medical treatments and wrote books with titles like The Cure for All Diseases and The Cure For All Cancers. Though Clark died of cancer in 2009, her work lives on today through several companies that sell products based on her supposed medical breakthroughs, including electric “zappers” that are now being touted for people concerned about the coronavirus.

The San Diego Union-Tribune wrote in 2002 that "in her books, Clark says her Syncrometer diagnoses the ‘true’ cause of diseases, while her herbal remedies and ‘zapper,’ a battery-operated device that produces a mild electric current, cure the diseases by eliminating parasites and toxins. Clark, who lacks a medical degree, claims her methods result in a 95 percent cure rate for serious diseases.” The paper noted that medical experts dismissed “Clark's theories as outlandish” and that she had been trailed by a series of complaints.

Retired psychiatrist Stephen Barrett documented Clark’s troubling history in a 2009 piece for his website Quackwatch. He noted then that the Federal Trade Commission went after individuals who sold products based on Clark’s theories after they claimed to be able to cure a variety of illnesses.

Fast-forward to today and several businesses are now pushing Clark-inspired products as a way to treat the coronavirus:

Media Matters has been documenting various coronavirus health scams and grifts that have connections to media personalities and outlets or have been promoted on social media. During the coronavirus pandemic, government regulators have sent warning letters to companies pushing fraudulent coronavirus-related products and have undertaken legal action against scammers.

“An electronic device designed to eliminate all kinds of microorganisms including viruses.”

Provita Health Store is a Florida-based company which sells zappers and other supposed health products. Its website posted a March 24 piece discussing the coronavirus and promoting the Clark-designed VariZapper 2.0, claiming that “Hulda Clark, seeing the need to wipe out all kinds of pathogens, created VariZapper, an electronic device designed to eliminate all kinds of microorganisms including viruses. VariZapper works by sending frequencies that match the frequencies of pathogenic microorganisms and in the same way that a crystal can burst at a certain frequency, viruses die when attacked using their own frequency.” From its website (emphasis in original):

Coronavirus is a family of viruses that can cause respiratory diseases in humans. However, this family of viruses can circulate between animals including camels, cattle, cats and bats.

The most recently discovered coronavirus is one that causes the disease globally known as COVID-19.

As most viruses, including flu, COVID-19 can spread through respiratory droplets that are released from the nose and mouth when an infected person coughs. When a person coughs, he releases about 3,000 droplets that can land on other people’s clothing, surfaces around them, and some of them may remain in the air.

VariZapper to remove viruses

Dr. Hulda Clark, seeing the need to wipe out all kinds of pathogens, created VariZapper, an electronic device designed to eliminate all kinds of microorganisms including viruses.

VariZapper works by sending frequencies that match the frequencies of pathogenic microorganisms and in the same way that a crystal can burst at a certain frequency, viruses die when attacked using their own frequency.

Human frequency ranges from 1520 to 9460 kHz, while frequencies of pathogens, viruses, parasites, bacteria, etc., range from 77 to 500 Khz. The currents emitted by the Zapper are low intensity so it does not affect the cells of the body, it does not produce effects on blood pressure, memory or body temperature. It only impacts pathogenic microorganisms without affecting us and without causing any side effects.

We recommend using the VariZapper before 9PM, because that is when the organs change polarity from north to south to enter the recovery phase, and the device will work at its maximum before that time. VariZapper is a totally safe and safe device even for pets and babies.

Provita Health Store’s Facebook page claimed on March 24 that its zapper “removes #pathogens from the body” by generating an electric current at a frequency that “ends with virtually any type of pathogen including #viruses” (that post did not explicitly mention the coronavirus). The store also promoted its zapper with similar language about destroying viruses before the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

“#Diseasecure … #huldaclarkzapper #covid19.”

NaturalHealthSupply.com is a Maine-based store which sells various Hulda Clark products, including zappers, and promotes its products under her name on various social media platforms.

On May 1, the store’s Instagram account wrote “take the time to zap” and included the hashtags “#curedisease #curediseases #curefordisease #diseasecure … #huldaclarkzapper #covid19 #coronavirus #quarantine #quarantinelife.” On February 28, its Instagram account posted a picture telling: "Wash your hands! Don’t forget to zap.” The post included the hashtag “#coronavirus.”

On Twitter, the company has responded to a question about the coronavirus by writing: “Experiment with using the Hulda Clark Zapper 30 kHz at 7 minutes on-20 minutes off-7 minutes on-20 minutes off-7 minutes on. Build up zapping minutes day to day based on tolerance to detox symptoms until symptoms are gone. No studies have been made on Coronavirus.”

The store’s owner and manager wrote a post on her personal website about the coronavirus headlined “We don’t need a COVID-19 vaccine" and wrote that her “household bases our health practices and lifestyle on the work of Hulda Clark.” She concluded: “At the very least, the Hulda Clark Zapper can eliminate all other microorganisms so that our body’s immune system can focus on fighting the new virus in town.” She also linked to clarkzapper.com, which is a zapper informational page that promotes and links to NaturalHealthSupply.com.

“I have a number of frequencies … that can be tried to help build the body up and hopefully destroy any contamination within the body.”

Zomatron is a English company that sells Hulda Clark’s “designs of electronic devices and also her recommended pharmaceutical grade Herbal tinctures under our Natural Harmony brand name.” The company also sells a colloidal silver generator and falsely claims that people can use silver “to prevent and eliminate the new coronavirus.” Zomatron states that international shipping is available for its products.

The company wrote on its Facebook page that its zappers can “help with this Coronavirus epidemic” and gave supposed frequencies to “hopefully destroy any contamination within the body.” Facebook has stated that its policy is to remove false coronavirus treatment and cure claims (Media Matters has found numerous examples of the social media platform falling short).

“We have already acquired frequencies to inactivate coronavirus.”

Zapper Store is a website that sells Hulda Clark zappers in the United States and elsewhere. Its website has a coronavirus section, where the company claims to have “already acquired frequencies to inactivate coronavirus, but do not have real infected people to test it in real life.” It added that the “best coronavirus zapper is Hulda Clark zapper Elzapp, but you can use also other types of frequency generators as a coronavirus coronavirus solution.”
