The Right-Wing Media’s Hillary Clinton Diagnoses, From “Stroke” To “Dead in Six Months”

For years, right-wing media have baselessly speculated on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s health, claiming she has suffered various illnesses ranging from “stroke” to “Parkinson’s disease,” and guessing she’ll be “dead in six months.” Here are some of right-wing media’s various Clinton diagnoses.

National Enquirer In September 2015: Clinton Will “Be Dead In Six Months.” In September 2015, the National Enquirer asserted, “Failing health and a deadly thirst for power are driving Hillary Clinton to an early grave,” claiming that Clinton was “desperate and deteriorating.” The article concluded that even though Clinton will “be dead in six months,” it is “her ultra-competitive husband” who is “pressuring her to stay on the campaign trail despite her decline!” [National Enquirer, 9/30/15]

Fox & Friends Hosts: Clinton’s Glasses Were “A Sign Of Brain Damage And Other Things.” Fox News hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade pushed a right-wing media conspiracy theory when they claimed Clinton’s glasses were “a sign of brain damage and other things,” adding that Dr. Drew, a “medicine specialist and TV personality,” said that he was “worried about the care [Clinton is] getting.” From the August 18 edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends:

AINSLEY EARHARDT (CO-HOST): You were right, he is a board-certified medicine specialist and TV personality, Dr. Drew.

BRIAN KILMEADE (CO-HOST): Dr. Drew, yeah.

STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): And what he said on the radio yesterday, which has been taken down, apparently --

EARHARDT: Of course.

DOOCY: -- by the radio station, is that the fact that when we saw Hillary Clinton wearing those prism glasses, a sign of brain damage --

KILMEADE: Yeah.

DOOCY: -- and other things, and he's worried about the care she's getting so far.

KILMEADE: And if you want to -- or remember, when she was wearing those glasses, remember when she made those famous line to Senator Ron Johnson, “What difference at this point does it make,” that's when she had those glasses on.

EARHARDT: Oh, right. [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 8/18/16]

Fox’s Karl Rove: Clinton’s Glasses Were “Only For People Who Have Traumatic Brain Injury.” According to the New York Post, during a May 8, 2014, event, Fox contributor Karl Rove suggested that Clinton’s use of corrective glasses were likely a sign she suffered a “traumatic brain injury”:

The official diagnosis was a blood clot. Rove told the conference near LA Thursday, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she's wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what's up with that.” [New York Post, 5/12/14]

Fox Host Sean Hannity: “One Doctor Friend Of Mine Was Really Convinced [Clinton] Had A Stroke.” Sean Hannity cited a “doctor friend” of his to baselessly speculate that Clinton “had a stroke,” adding that, given his assumption, it is not “unfair at all to ask for [Clinton’s] medical records.” From the August 9 edition of The Sean Hannity Show:

SEAN HANNITY (HOST): We had our Fox medical A-team on last night and I got to tell you, they're saying we really need to see the real records. We need to see her Wall Street speeches where she got $250 grand from all the big insurance companies, all the big banks, all the people buying her influence. Let's see the speeches and let's see the medical records. She keeps talking about Donald Trump's tax returns, let's talk about that.

[...]

You know the one thing that one doctor friend of mine was really convinced she had a stroke. And that some of her reactions are indicative that that’s coming from the part of the brain where some damage happened. Now as I understand it, a mini-stroke or a TIA may not show up the same way on an MRI. I remember my brother-in-law, a radiologist, would literally -- he was at home, they'd send him pictures, we'd be at family dinners and he would have to go in and look at pictures and he'd say, “See this is where the stroke took place, right here.” And I'd say, “What does it means for this person?” And with perfect pinpoint accuracy and detail, he would describe what impact it would have on that portion of the brain in terms of the people's function.

[...]

So I don’t think it’s unfair at all to ask for her medical records. [Premiere Radio Networks, The Sean Hannity Show, 8/9/16]

National Enquirer: Blood Clot Confirmed That Clinton “Was At The Center Of A Shocking Brain Cancer Drama.” The National Enquirer claimed that Clinton “was at the center of a shocking brain cancer drama,” and used reports that Clinton had a “blood clot” to suggest that she was suffering a “brain crisis.” From the January 2, 2013 article:

A rep for hospitalized Secretary of State HILLARY CLINTON confirms the blood clot is lodged near her brain confirming The NATIONAL ENQUIRER's special reports on her condition.

Doctors said the clot is located in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear.

Only days after The ENQUIRER exclusively reported that Secretary of State HILLARY CLINTON was at the center of a shocking brain cancer drama and was undergoing extensive secret medical tests, her reps went public with the news on Sunday night Dec. 30 that she was indeed hospitalized in New York City and disclosed that she was battling a blood clot that had formed following her head concussion earlier this month!

[...]

The 65-year-old former First Lady fainted earlier this month and after an exhaustive investigation by The ENQUIRER, we broke a bombshell cover story that hit newsstands a few days ago that revealed insiders believe Hillary is battling brain cancer, and sources said she was facing a hush-hush battery of medical tests to confirm the diagnosis. Sean Hannity: Clinton’s Reaction To A Question From A Reporter Was “Seizure-Esque.” Sean Hannity called Clinton’s reaction to a question from a reporter “violent, out of control movements on her part,” suggesting the “movements” looked “seizure-esque.” From the August 10 edition of Fox News’ Hannity:

SEAN HANNITY (HOST): What’s your take?

FIONA GATA: It's just so hard to speculate based on snippets of the clips that, you know, what is going on without having a full examination and workup.

HANNITY: Look at this video right here, watch her reaction. I'm not -- it almost seems seizure-esque to me. Is that?

GATA: There are types of seizures, local seizures, that sometimes can cause one body part, but it would be very rare. I mean typically seizures will generalize, so I can't say that's a seizure. It could be distress.

HANNITY: Are there many seizures like that, Dr. Siegel?

MARC SIEGEL: Well I’m not a neurologist, and I don't think that necessarily looks like a seizure, but I will say this --

HANNITY: Let's rerack that, what do you think this is?

SIEGEL: I’ll tell you what I think it is, I think that we've seen enough there, especially in someone who has a long medical history and who's approaching 70 years old, for me to be able to say here that both of our candidates need to release their medical information. Sean, the whole idea --

HANNITY: This looks like violent, out of control movements on her part.

SIEGEL: And it could be, and I say could be, related to previous head trauma she had. It's possible. That's why I need to see the records. That's why a neurologist needs to come forward and give a press conference and say this is what is going on with her. She may very well be completely fit, but we want to know. InfoWars: “There Are Many That Now Believe That Hillary Clinton Actually Has Parkinson’s Disease.” Fringe conspiracy theory website InfoWars ran an article questioning if Clinton “has some very serious health problems.” Arguing that “many” believe Clinton “actually has Parkinson’s Disease,” the author noted that while “Coughing can be a symptom of so many different illnesses … it is interesting to note that it happens to be one of the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease.” The author concluded that “the truth is,” Clinton “has exhibited so many other symptoms” of Parkinson’s “as well.” From the September 6 article:

On Labor Day, Clinton had another of her epic coughing fits, and this time it happened during an election rally in Cleveland that was being broadcast nationwide. She attempted to laugh it off by making jokes such as “every time I think about Trump I get allergic”, but nothing could hide the fact that something was seriously wrong with her as the coughing fit went on for nearly four minutes.

[...]

Coughing can be a symptom of so many different illnesses, but it is interesting to note that it happens to be one of the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.

[...]

By itself, it would be impossible to link Hillary Clinton with Parkinson’s Disease just based on her coughing. But the truth is that she has exhibited so many of the other symptoms as well. [InfoWars.com, 9/6/16]

InfoWars: “Radiologist: Hillary Clinton Has A ‘Serious Underlying Disease.” Conspiracy theory website InfoWars cited a “[b]oard-certified diagnostic radiologist” who “reached out to Infowars to question why Hillary is being given the blood thinner Coumadin.” According to InfoWars, the doctor speculated that because Clinton is taking a blood-thinner, “her risk of morbidity/mortality from blood clots without Coumadin must be substantial,” adding, “Clinton has a ‘serious underlying disease’ that her campaign is hiding from the American people.” From the August 19 article:

Board-certified diagnostic radiologist Dr. Milton R. Wolf says that Hillary Clinton has a “serious underlying disease” that her campaign is hiding from the American people.

Wolf, a practicing physician in Kansas City, reached out to Infowars to question why Hillary is being given the blood thinner Coumadin, a drug used to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots in veins and arteries.

According to Wolf, “Hillary’s doctors know you would NEVER, NEVER give Coumadin to normal, healthy patients. It’s too dangerous,” and that this must mean, “her risk of morbidity/mortality from blood clots without Coumadin must be substantial.”

In his experience, patients who take Coumadin are at risk of “intracranial hemorrhage” and suffer falls “on a regular basis”. [InfoWars.com, 8/19/16]

The Daily Caller: “According To A WebMD Diagnosis,” Clinton “Should Really Check To See If She Has A Urinary Tract Infection.” Citing WebMD, The Daily Caller’s Steve Guest wrote that “Clinton should really check to see if she has a urinary tract infection.” According to Guest, “The symptoms, as observed by [The Daily Caller] and entered into WebMD include fatigue, mood swings, swelling, weight gain, impaired judgment, confusion, slurring words, frequent urination, and bald spots.” From the December 21, 2015, article:

Hillary Clinton’s health has become the focus of many people’s concerns, so, with the help of WebMD, The Daily Caller offers up the following diagnosis.

According to a WebMD diagnosis, the 68-year-old Clinton should really check to see if she has a urinary tract infection.

The symptoms, as observed by TheDC and entered into WebMD include fatigue, mood swings, swelling, weight gain, impaired judgment, confusion, slurring words, frequent urination, and bald spots.

[...]

Frequent urination is well documented, the most recent incident was well-publicized and stemmed form the Democratic debate last Saturday.

[...]

While not a doctor, TheDC nevertheless highly recommends that Clinton see a doctor in the bathroom of her choice and then release her full medical history. [The Daily Caller, 12/21/15]

On Hannity, Fox’s Dr. Marc Siegel Speculates That Clinton Might Have “Post-Concussion Syndrome” Four Years After The Fact. During the August 8 edition of his Fox News program, host Sean Hannity asked Fox medical correspondent Dr. Marc Siegel to respond to a video of Clinton laughing with reporters at a campaign event, which he falsely suggested might show the candidate having “a mini-seizure.” Siegel responded that Clinton may still suffer from “post-concussion syndrome” -- after a 2012 concussion -- which he said could affect balance, cause dizziness, and impair memory.
