Will Fox Now “Move On” From Focusing On President Obama's Birth Certificate?

Fox hosts have claimed that President Obama need only produce his birth certificate to “put ... to bed” the endless right-wing speculation about his place of birth. Now that Obama distributed copies of his birth certificate to reporters and posted it on the White House website, will Fox, in the words of its host Sean Hannity, “move on”?

Fox Hosts Claim Releasing Birth Certificate Would “Settle All Of This Controversy”

“Bor[ed]” Of Birth Certificate Issue, O'Reilly Calls For Obama To “Put This Whole Thing To Bed.” On the April 8 edition of his Fox News show, Bill O'Reilly said that the birth certificate issue is “getting boring” and that Obama should “put this whole thing to bed.” [Fox News, The O'Reilly Factor, 4/8/11]

Hannity: “Produce The Birth Certificate, It's Over And Done With.” From the March 24 edition of Hannity:

HANNITY: First of all. What's the deal? Produce the birth certificate, it's over, done with. Chris Matthews wants it.

McGUIRK (Imus in the Morning Executive Producer): Show the birth certificate--

HANNITY: Show the birth certificate.

McGUIRK: Let's get it over with.

HANNITY: Get it over with.

HELDMAN: Wait, what does Indonesia have to do with being born in the United States? How is that material to whether or not he was born in the United States? What is the logic?

HANNITY: Why won't they release the birth certificate?

HELDMAN: What is the logic? What's the connection?

HANNITY: Explain to me - Why don't they just release it and get it over with? And, we don't have to talk about it -

HELDMAN: Because it's insulting.

EHRLICH: In fact, I'm tired of talking about it now.

HANNITY: So the only reason that they don't release it is because it insults him.

McGUIRK: Hey, Trump for President baby, that's all I'm saying.

HELDMAN: Well, I wouldn't.

McGUIRK: He mixes it up, he mixes it up.

HELDMAN: Oh my goodness, maybe his hair, but not Trump.

HANNITY: Who do you like?

HELDMAN: I would love to, I would love to have...

HANNITY: Okay, we're out of time.

HELDMAN: Sarah Palin on the top of the ticket! [Fox News, Hannity, 3/24/11]

Hannity On Obama's Birth Certificate: “Can't They Just Produce It, And We Move On?” On the March 23 edition of his show, Hannity asked, “What do you think about this birth certificate issue? I mean, it has not been my main issue, but it kind of does get a little odd here after a while. Can't they just produce it and we move on?” [Fox News, Hannity, 3/23/11]

Doocy: “He Could End It Simply, Just Show [The Birth Certificate] To Us.” During an interview with Trump on the April 18 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy responded to Trump's claim that Obama “has not given a birth certificate” by saying, “He could end it simply, just show it to us, and it'd be over.” [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 4/18/11]

Dobbs Repeatedly Claimed Producing Birth Certificate Would “Settle All Of The Controversy.” During the July 15, 2009, edition of his radio program, current Fox Business host Lou Dobbs repeatedly said that Obama would end the issue by releasing his birth certificate. After a caller said “something doesn't smell right” with Obama, Dobbs said that the “way to get rid of those odors is always just open the windows and let the sun shine in. And all we need here is a doggone document.” Dobbs later said in response to another caller that “this president refused to provide the documentation that would settle all of the controversy here.” Dobbs also said, “I can't understand why the president wouldn't just move to get this stuff out of the way. Show the documents, get it done.” [United Stations Radio Networks, The Lou Dobbs Show, 7/15/09]

Obama Releases Birth Certificate

White Houses Posts Obama's Long Form Birth Certificate. From a blog post on the White House's website:

The President believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn't good for the country. It may have been good politics and good TV, but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country. Therefore, the President directed his counsel to review the legal authority for seeking access to the long form certificate and to request on that basis that the Hawaii State Department of Health make an exception to release a copy of his long form birth certificate. They granted that exception in part because of the tremendous volume of requests they had been getting.

At a time of great consequence for this country - when we should be debating how we win the future, reduce our deficit, deal with high gas prices, and bring stability to the Middle East, Washington, DC, was once again distracted by a fake issue. The President's hope is that with this step, we can move on to debating the bigger issues that matter to the American people and the future of the country.
