Orbitz Agrees To Review Advertising Policy

As DropFox reported, after three weeks and thousands of messages, the campaign led by the Courage Campaign, DropFox, CREDO, Equality Matters, and the League of Conservation Voters has yielded a positive result: Orbitz has agreed to review their media buys to ensure they “reflect the values that Orbitz the brand, and company, embody.” From DropFox:

On May 16, members of the LGBT community, led by the Courage Campaign and Equality Matters, joined with DropFox to ask Orbitz, as a friend to the LGBT community, to reconsider their advertising relationship with Fox News due to Fox's long record of irresponsible and indecent anti-LGBT bigotry.

CREDO and the League of Conservation Voters then added their voices to the effort urging Orbitz to reconsider advertising on Fox News, as the network also has a record of deliberately propagating misinformation about climate science.

In all, nearly 200,000 customers signed a letter that asked Orbitz to reconsider and thousands of messages were sent to Orbitz via Twitter and Facebook.

In a statement released today, Orbitz advised they have “heard” the “concerns” and will undertake a review of their media buying. Regarding ad purchases going forward, Orbitz confirmed that its “customers will see that our actions will reflect the values that Orbitz the brand, and company, embody.”

From Orbitz's statement:

We are pleased to report that the Courage Campaign has entered into a constructive dialogue with Orbitz over these topics and we look forward to building a relationship based on mutual respect. We believe that a discussion about our advertising practices is healthy, important and timely.

Orbitz has a long standing record within the LGBT and allies community who recognize us as a company which embraces tolerance, nondiscrimination and equality not only with our words but with our actions.

[...]

The question posed to Orbitz by many within the LGBT community resulted in our decision to review the policies and process used to evaluate where advertising is placed.

[...]

With this foundation of fact guiding our principles, and after careful initial review of this situation, including speaking to members of the gay community, LGBT leadership and other corporate advertisers, Orbitz has made the following determination:

  • Orbitz has heard from the LGBT community about its concerns that its advertisements appear on programs which have objectionable content.
  • In the coming weeks, Orbitz will conduct a review of programming on the full range of media we buy. We will also evaluate the best practices among other companies who share our core values to see what approaches they use when evaluating media placements.

[...]

Our response is sincere and we are confident that moving forward, our customers will see that our actions will reflect the values that Orbitz the brand, and company, embody.
