Fox’s Lara Trump credits the president for “miraculous” drop in prices — but prices are actually higher

During the June 4 edition of Fox News’ Outnumbered, Fox host Lara Trump suggested that under her father-in-law’s administration, there has been a “decrease in grocery prices, gas prices, overall energy, airline prices, egg prices. All of these things are down. It's miraculous.”

Unfortunately for both Trump apologists and American consumers, the prices of those commodities are not lower now than when President Donald Trump came into office for his second term, with the exception of airline fares. (Experts actually blame economic uncertainty under Trump for weaker demand for air travel, which in turn has driven down average airfares.) The most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that most of the prices Lara Trump mentioned are elevated compared to January.

  • Even after declining from a peak earlier in the year, the Consumer Price Index for “food at home,” what the BLS calls grocery prices, remains slightly higher than it was in January.

  • After a peak in April, the average price of gasoline remains about 2 cents higher in the most recent data ($3.127 on June 2) compared to the day Trump took office ($3.109 on January 20).

  • The average price of electricity has increased since Trump took office in January (at 17.9 cents/kilowatt hour) and remains at the highest point in the past year (18.1 cents/kilowatt hour).

  • And the average price of eggs ($5.122 per dozen) remains near the record high ($6.227) from earlier in the Trump administration, and is higher than when Trump began his second term ($4.953 per dozen).
