New Fox Nation host Lara Logan, who aired a disastrous interview featuring a fabricated account of the 2012 Benghazi attacks on CBS’ 60 Minutes over six years ago, today repeated long-debunked lies about the attacks to criticize Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
On Wednesday, Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked Logan about Biden’s criticism of the apparent lies President Donald Trump has told to justify the assassination of an Iranian general. Logan responded by bringing up the Benghazi attacks.
First, there was no U.S. Embassy in Benghazi. The State Department facility that was attacked was an unofficial consulate, so it did not have the same security that an embassy would have.
Second, as to whether the “cavalry” came, a six-member team from the nearby CIA annex and 60 allied Libyan militiamen responded to distress calls from the State Department facility, and reinforcements from the actual embassy in Tripoli arrived that night; additional special operations teams were deployed from outside of the country but could not arrive in time to assist. Logan pushed a similar lie years ago -- claiming the small CIA team acted against orders to launch a rescue -- and it has been debunked by congressional testimony over and over.
In 2013, Logan aired a segment on 60 Minutes about the attack that was hyped by conservative media and Republican lawmakers, but that quickly fell apart under scrutiny. Within two weeks, the show had retracted Logan’s report, apologized to viewers, launched an internal review, and suspended Logan from the program. She is now a host on Fox Nation.
