GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (CO-HOST): Usually during these convention speeches, they take the opportunity to show a different side of themselves, maybe reach out to voters that have some doubts. Donald Trump doubled down on exactly who he was, the crowd loved it. How about those outside that hall?

MATTHEW DOWD: Well, here's a guy that now wants totally to embrace the law and order part of this. And I think he tried to come across as sort of like Batman, the crime-fighting superhero in the course of this. But I think came across more as the Dark Knight in the course of that speech last night. I thought it's OK to go talk about all the problems in America, because two-thirds of the country think we're off on the wrong track and more than half of the country thinks they've lost the American dream in the course of this. But I thought he should have moved to more uplifting language, something more optimistic because voters want you to understand their fears and move to their hopes.
