Beck will not let AZ “80 mile” loss of “sovereignty” myth die

Glenn Beck may be late to the party, but now that he's found it, he just won't leave.

Two weeks ago, Fox News anchor Shannon Bream offered a ridiculous report in which she claimed, “A massive stretch of Arizona now off limits to Americans. Critics say the administration is, in effect, giving a major strip of the Southwest back to Mexico.” We quickly contacted the Fish and Wildlife Service and completely debunked the report: In fact, the “massive stretch” of land is about five miles square, it's been closed since 2006 for the construction of a vehicle barrier, a 12-foot fence, and to “allow the Border Patrol to do their work,” and it obviously hasn't been given back to Mexico.

Beck first picked up the debunked report on his June 21 Fox News show, and he mentioned it again today on both his radio and Fox News shows. On Fox, he falsely claimed that “it is so dangerous that in Arizona they have closed off an area that stretches 80 miles along the border. Some might say that's called giving up sovereignty.” Watch:

Perhaps this is the time to again note that Beck has claimed that if he “get[s] out of control and start[s] leveling baseless charges that can't be backed up,” then he would be “fired.”
