Defending his recent comments about San Francisco's ballot resolution encouraging public schools and colleges to prohibit military recruitment on campuses, Fox news host Bill O'Reilly “put out the call to raise a San Francisco militia.” On the November 14 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, with guests Jack Armstrong and Joe Getty, talk show hosts at San Francisco radio station KNEW, O'Reilly said, “You can have a militia that's a rainbow coalition, armed with spatulas.” He also explained that “they'll have to have uniforms unlike most of your other parades, which are, you know, in the buff.” Armstrong agreed, adding, “Less khaki, more leather in our uniforms.”

Armstrong and Getty aired O'Reilly's initial defense of his criticism of the ballot initiative. O'Reilly declared on the November 8 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show: "[I]f Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you [San Francisco] up, we're not going to do anything about it. ... You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."

From the November 14 broadcast of Fox News' The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly:

O'REILLY: Well, I want -- I want you guys, Armstrong and Getty, to put out the call to raise a San Francisco militia.

ARMSTRONG: [Laughing]

O'REILLY: So that we -- the rest of the country -- don't have to come in if you're attacked. Your own militia. You can't have guns, but I'm sure -- you know, you could have --

GETTY: We can't have “don't ask, don't tell” either.

O'REILLY: No, no, but that's good. You can have a militia that's a rainbow coalition, armed with spatulas.

[...]

O'REILLY: And let us know about the militia. I know you'll have a lot of volunteers.

ARMSTRONG: Yes, of course.

O'REILLY: The San Francisco militia. We'll send a Factor camera out to shoot basic training.

ARMSTRONG: I expect them to have very festive uniforms.

O'REILLY: Yeah. They will. And the basic training will be in the Haight. OK, we'll have it right on the Castro Street, march up and down, since they're so good at parades. And actually we will -- they'll have to have uniforms unlike most of your other parades, which are, you know, in the buff. Here -- I don't know about a naked militia. Maybe that would frighten Al Qaeda --

E.D. HILL (co-host): [Laughing]

O'REILLY: I don't know about it.

ARMSTRONG: Less khaki, more leather in our uniforms.
