The United States attacked and invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 following the devastating September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks because the Taliban-run Afghan government harbored the Al Qaeda terrorist organization which carried out the attacks. It is still ongoing and is now the longest war in American history.
