TUCKER CARLSON (HOST): Keep in mind that [special counsel Robert] Mueller's probe began in order to investigate claims that Russia influenced the 2016 election, or even directly colluded with the Trump campaign in order to alter the outcome of that election.
[Former national security adviser Michael] Flynn's guilty plea today does not prove that claim. In fact, it undercuts it. Flynn admits he lied about initiating contact with [former Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey] Kislyak last December. December, check a calendar -- that's a month after the November election, too late to sink the Hillary campaign. There goes that theory.
Instead, Flynn was apparently trying to promote U.S. interests. According to the indictment of him today, passed on by the Mueller people, he urged Russia not to overreact to sanctions implemented by the Obama administration, and he urged Russia also not to veto a U.N. resolution condemning Israel.
If investigators can prove that the Trump campaign worked with Vladimir Putin in order to steal the 2016 election, by all means, prosecute. We will be the first to cheer that on, to call for longer prison terms, because that's a crime. But this? So far, it's hard to know exactly how this makes America better.
