Fox News completely ignored Trump’s comment that he doesn’t “think about Americans’ financial situation” as gas prices, inflation skyrocket

Fox News and Fox Business completely ignored Trump's comments about his priorities during Iran war negotiations

Fox News and Fox Business have completely ignored President Donald Trump’s statement that he isn't considering Americans' financial situations during negotiations with Iran, as gas prices and inflation continue to soar in large part due to his ongoing war.

  • On Tuesday, President Trump was asked before departing for a trip to China about what extent “Americans' financial situations” were motivating him to make a deal with Iran, to which he responded, “Not even a little bit,” adding, “The only thing that matters when I'm talking about Iran – they can't have a nuclear weapon. I don't think about Americans' financial situation.”

Fox News and Fox Business completely ignored Trump's comment, with neither network offering any commentary or reporting on the comments after his May 12 press gaggle through 1 p.m. on May 13, according to a Media Matters review. Fox News, which did air the press gaggle outside of the White House live, later edited out Trump's remark on Americans' financial situation when re-airing clips, with The Five choosing to air a montage of Trump castigating reporters during the gaggle.

  • Despite Trump’s disregard, rising fuel costs caused by his war in Iran continue to have a massive impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives and cost of living. Amid the ongoing economic pain for Americans, Fox News has continually echoed Trump’s sentiments, minimizing Americans’ economic pain while encouraging the president to continue bombing Iran.

  • Methodology

  • Media Matters searched transcripts in the SnapStream video database for all original programming on Fox Business Network and Fox News Channel for any of the terms “Trump,” “Iran,” or “president” or any variation of the term “American” within close proximity of either of the terms “situation” or “struggle” or any variation of the term “financial” from May 12, 2026, when President Donald Trump claimed during a press gathering that he doesn't think about Americans' financial situations while negotiating the Iran war, through 1 p.m. ET on May 13, 2026.

We timed segments, which we defined as instances when Trump's statement that he isn't thinking about Americans' financial situations was the stated topic of discussion or when we found significant discussion of Trump's statement. We defined significant discussion as instances when two or more speakers in a multitopic segment discussed Trump's statement with one another.

We also timed mentions, which we defined as instances when a speaker mentioned Trump's statement on Americans' financial situations without another speaker in the segment engaging with the comment, and teasers, which we defined as instances when the anchor or host promoted a segment about Trump's statement scheduled to air later in the broadcast.
