As gas prices continue to climb across the country, listeners to the May 5 edition of The Megyn Kelly Wrap-Up Show called in to tell host Emily Jashinsky what they think of President Donald Trump's economy.
NBC News reported the national average price of gas rose to $4.46 a gallon on Monday, with some states boasting prices over $7. The crisis, driven by the ongoing war in Iran and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, has begun to impact American consumers, prompting some self-described Trump supporters to vent frustration at the president.
The Megyn Kelly Wrap-Up Show airs each weekday on SiriusXM after The Megyn Kelly Show. On Tuesday, while some listeners expressed their support for the war, some also shared their concerns about rising gas prices and affordability.
- One caller said she trusted Trump had “something up his sleeve” when it came to the war in Iran but added, “He does need to focus more on America and our infrastructure.” She also added, “People are tired of the war. They don't want the war. They want him to focus on America's needs and wants and gas prices and housing and the economy, and he's not doing that.”
- Another said, “I voted for Trump three times, I'm a hardcore supporter of his, but I am extremely disappointed in what he is doing,” adding, “I know a lot of people who are like me who are — seriously, we are really regretting our vote for our president.” The caller also urged Trump to finish the war in Iran, adding, “We're going to lose the election in November, all of them — trust me — if he continues this route. The gas prices are so high, you know, working two jobs we can still barely make it. My son and my grandkids are never going to be able to own a home. I mean, this is not the way it is supposed to go, you know? I don’t understand what’s going on. … I don’t know what happened to Trump, but this is not the same person I voted for.”
- A third caller, who said “I've been a Trump supporter for quite a while,” claimed that rising fuel prices are “just killing” truck drivers: “It's going to put a lot of drivers out of business.” He said, “I'm a truck driver. I drive around the Midwest, and a normal week for a driver is between $500-$700 a week in fuel. Right now, I'm averaging between $1,900 to $2,100 a week in diesel fuel. And it's just killing the drivers. It's going to put a lot of drivers out of business.”
- A fourth caller said Trump is “totally missing the ball on the economy and affordability.” He said, “Regarding affordability, I'm really tired of Trump talking about the stock market all the time, which is great for a certain sector of the country. But for the middle class and the lower class, I don't really know how much invested they are, so I think he's totally missing the ball on the economy and affordability.”
