CHER CALVIN (CO-ANCHOR): The summer travel season is officially underway and high fuel prices are disrupting travel plans. Here's a live look at LAX tonight, where flights are being canceled because of the high costs for airlines. American Airlines is suspending several routes this summer.
MICAH OHLMAN (CO-ANCHOR): Travelers will now have to make new arrangements or receive refunds for those tickets. KTLA's Chris Wolfe has more from LAX.
CHRIS WOLFE (REPORTER): Flyer beware, your summer travel plans out of southern California may be a bust. Just as we approach the busy summer travel season, airlines operating out of LAX are suspending or canceling flights altogether because of rising fuel costs, especially with the war in Iran. Major carrier American Airlines is announcing a temporary suspension of nonstop flights to Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington Dulles International Airport in the DC area.
In April, Norse Atlantic Airways canceled all of its summer flights out of LAX to Europe, including notable destinations like London, Paris, and Rome.

FLYER 1: It really is affecting the general population. I travel a lot for work.
FLYER 2: I'm not a big fan of travel anyways, so…
FLYER 3: We're going to have to be very creative about our summers this year.
FLYER 4: I can't imagine what it's going to be like. A lot of people make plans, and this is what they count on. Some people have to go for their jobs. Some people like me, I have to help out family. I don't know what the alternative would be.
WOLFE: According to reports, jet fuel prices in Los Angeles have spiked more than 40% since the conflict in the Middle East started. Experts believe fuel costs will continue to rise, putting more flights in jeopardy throughout the summer.
American Airlines says it will continue to fly to Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington Dulles, but those are now connecting flights.
