Across the country, florists are telling local news stations that rising fuel costs due to the Iran war are impacting their businesses and may drive up the price of Mother’s Day bouquets this year.
The Trump administration’s war with Iran has caused gas and fuel costs to increase dramatically, with the national average for a regular gallon topping $4.546 as of May 8. Florists explained to local news outlets that they are paying more when they fill up delivery vehicles’ gas tanks and pay increased shipping fees for imported flowers.
A Charlotte station explained, “Most flowers in the U.S. are imported, and fuel surcharges can add up fast when they're flown in.” One flower shop owner in Nashville said bracing for the gas bill is “breathtaking, and not in a good way.” One Kansas City florist said, “I am looking at all kinds of extra fuel charges which increases the price of the flower on top of tariffs that we already have. So yeah, it's a problem, it's a problem. It's expensive.” Another reporter noted, “The flowers are still beautiful, but from the farm to your front door, almost nothing about getting them here is getting cheaper."
