As the Trump administration escalates its ongoing trade war with Canada, Fox News and Fox Business personalities are once again throwing their support behind President Donald Trump’s antics, even though they threaten both the U.S. economy and Republicans’ chances in the upcoming midterm elections.

Some of these commentators echoed arguments by the president that Canada’s trade practices with the U.S. were unfair, justifying the trade war. Of course, Trump himself signed a trade deal with Canada, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), during his first term.

• Fox News host Sean Hannity: “I like President Trump’s idea” of renaming Lake Ontario because “I’m just tired of Canada taxing, let’s see, our farmers, our dairy farmers, you know, milk.” He added: “They have not been free and fair trade partners, I'm sorry, and they kind of deserve what has been happening.” [Fox News, Hannity, 8/25/26]
• Fox contributor Hugh Hewitt: Canada is “trying to get the 2% free ride around the American defense budget. They have been taking advantage of American generosity and goodwill.” [Fox News, Special Report, 8/24/26]
• Fox Business guest Victoria Coates: “This situation was due for a major reset. I mean, Canada has just been literally stealing our lunch for years now. And so, I think the president is rightly driving a much harder bargain with them.” [Fox Business, Mornings with Maria, 8/24/26]
• Fox Business host Taylor Riggs: “Growing up, we always thought Canada was that good neighbor, they’re on our side. But recently they've shown us, do they have our best interest in mind if they’re pursuing or in relationships with China? Then that also makes me rethink my relationship with Canada.” [Fox Business, The Big Money Show, 8/25/26]

Some on Fox also welcomed Trump’s recent attempt to seize more direct control of much of Venezuela’s oil reserves (the U.S. deposed its former president, Nicolás Maduro, earlier this year), portraying the deal as a way to gain leverage over Canada in the trade war. However, Venezuela’s current oil production — approximately 1.12 million barrels per day in July — falls far short of replacing what the U.S. imports from Canada, which the U.S. Energy Information Administration put at nearly 4 million barrels per day in 2025.

• Fox Business contributor Lou Basenese: “I do think this is strategic” to make an oil deal with Venezuela, and “I also think it’s kind of why President Trump is picking a battle with Canada.” Basenese added: “I think it’s smart. The entire global supply chain for oil is being rewritten.” [Fox Business, The Big Money Show, 8/28/26]
• Heritage Foundation’s Victoria Coates on Fox Business: Venezuelan oil “can replace some of that Alberta crude” due to the “trade spat with Canada.” Coates also suggested annexing Alberta as the 51st state of the U.S. [Fox Business, The Bottom Line, 8/28/26]
• Heritage Foundation’s EJ Antoni on Fox & Friends: Trump’s oil deal with Venezuela, “by increasing Venezuelan imports, it means we’re less reliant on Canadian imports.” Antoni continued: “That reduces Canada’s leverage in the trade talks that we’re having right now.” [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 8/31/26]
• Fox Business host Elizabeth MacDonald: “President Trump, he did warn that this Venezuela deal puts Canada on notice, that it’s got no leverage in the trade fight with the U.S.” She added: “This threatens Canada.
