Fox News op-ed calls to boycott “51 businesses at war with conservatives” – including many that advertise on Fox

Fox News published an article Feb. 27, titled “These 51 big businesses target conservatives. Here’s what you can do to stop them,” that calls out several of its own advertisers as being “at war with conservatives” and suggests readers boycott as well.

The February 27 article by Justin Haskins, director of The Heartland Institute’s Socialism Research Center, complains that “over the past decade, hundreds of large U.S. corporations have adopted woke policies, regularly injecting left-wing ideals into their products, services and employment practices.” The article cites a “new project launched by the 1792 Exchange, a nonprofit organization,” that “assesses more than 1,000 companies’ ‘policies, practices, and other relevant criteria to determine the likelihood a company will cancel a contract or client, or boycott, divest, or deny services based on views or beliefs,’” sorting them into “lower risk,” “medium risk,” and “high risk” categories. (Media Matters has written extensively about the Heartland Institute, particularly around its climate denial.)

The list includes 147 companies that the 1792 Exchange has identified as “high risk.” The author chose to spotlight “51 of the most impactful for this article” and suggested that readers should “switch” away from these companies “whenever possible.” He also suggested conservatives should “send a letter to businesses that are engaging in discrimination to tell them that you’re considering leaving because of their actions.”

The 51 companies listed are: Ally Financial, Amalgamated Bank, Bank of America, Berkshire Bank, BMO Harris, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Eastern Bank, Fifth Third Bank, First Republic Bank, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, PNC, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, TD Bank, Bancorp, Trillium Asset Management, Truist, US Bank, Wells Fargo, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, XPO Logistics, Best Buy, Home Depot, Kohl’s, Lululemon, Macy’s, Madewell, Target, Walmart. Alibaba, Amazon, Chewy, eBay, Etsy, Shopify, Warby Parker. Altria, Ben & Jerry’s, Cargill, Coca-Cola, HelloFresh, Kellogg’s, McDonald’s, PepsiCo, Starbucks, and the JM Smucker Company.
