Fox News barely covered latest waves of Trump tariffs

Over the span of 4 days, Fox spent less than 10 minutes discussing Trump's new tariffs

According to a review of Fox News transcripts by Media Matters, the right-wing cable news channel spent a mere 9 minutes this week discussing two new waves of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

  • On July 20, President Donald Trump announced a new 50% tariff on many Canadian imports, in the latest escalation of a trade war between the U.S. and Canada that was initially triggered by Trump last year. These latest tariffs are set to take effect in mid-August.

This announcement was followed on Friday by long-teased tariffs on imports of 60 economies that comprise about 99% of U.S. trade. These new tariffs are ostensibly meant to encourage trading partners to address the use of forced labor in their supply chains, though experts point out that this justification doesn’t hold water. For one thing, the U.S. itself uses the forced labor of prisoners.

Trump’s tariffs are costly. The Tax Foundation has estimated that “in 2025, the Trump tariffs amounted to an average tax increase of $1,000 per US household.” According to Yale’s Budget Lab, before either of these new tariffs took effect, Trump’s other tariffs will already cause “a loss of between about $760 and $940 for the average household” this year alone.

In the past, Fox has acknowledged that the president’s tariffs are hurting Americans. They have linked the affordability crisis in Trump’s second term to election victories by Democrats.

Yet now that Trump has again imposed what is effectively a tax paid by American consumers, the network is turning away. In the same time frame, Fox instead chose to dedicate more than three times as much coverage to its latest culture war issue, controversies surrounding WNBA star Caitlin Clark — 29 minutes — versus 9 minutes of coverage for Trump’s new tariffs.

  • Methodology

  • Media Matters searched transcripts in the SnapStream video database for all original programming on Fox News Channel for any of the terms “tariff,” “Canada,” or “trade,” from July 20, 2026, when the Trump administration announced its 50% tariff on Canada, through 12 pm EDT July 24, 2026.

Media Matters also searched transcripts in the SnapStream video database for all original programming on Fox News Channel for either of the terms “Clark” or “WNBA” over the same time period.

We timed segments, which we defined as instances when either the Trump administration's newest rounds of tariffs or WNBA star Cailtin Clark was the stated topic of discussion, or when we found significant discussion of either story. We defined significant discussion as instances when two or more speakers in a multitopic segment discussed either story with one another.

We also timed mentions, which we defined as instances when a speaker mentioned either story without another speaker in the segment engaging with the comment, and teasers, which we defined as instances when the anchor or host promoted a segment about either story scheduled to air later in the broadcast.

We rounded all reported times to the nearest minute.
