  • Veterans, national security experts slam Beck's "insulting," "anti-military" support of a "private army" in Afghanistan

    Blog ››› ››› DAVE HUGHES

This past Saturday, ignoring rampant corruption among military contractors, Glenn Beck and Andrew Napolitano endorsed the idea of a "private army" taking charge of the war in Afghanistan, with Beck specifically claiming that there are "private individuals that could probably take care of things in Afghanistan better."

In statements obtained by Media Matters, veterans and national security experts criticized Beck and Napolitano for their "outrageous" comments.

  • Jewish Funds for Justice CEO responds to Glenn Beck's claims that putting the common good first "leads to death camps"

Blog ››› ››› TOM ALLISON & DAVE HUGHES

Earlier today Glenn Beck attacked Jewish Funds for Justice CEO Simon Greer for his April 14 Washington Post op-ed, focusing particularly on Greer's statement that "[t]o put God first is to put humankind first, and to put humankind first is to put the common good first." Beck lashed out, saying: "This leads to death camps. A Jew, of all people, should know that. This is exactly the kind of talk that led to the death camps in Germany. Put humankind and the common good first."

Greer responded this afternoon, highlighting Beck's history of "recklessly invoking Nazi Germany and the Holocaust in order to advance his political agenda" and writing that "Beck's reflexive hatred for government is rejected by Americans of all backgrounds."

    From Greer's May 28 statement:

This morning, on his nationally syndicated radio program, Tea Party hero Glenn Beck lambasted me for writing, in a Washington Post op-ed, that "to put God first is to put humankind first, and to put humankind first is to put the common good first." Beck responded by claiming that "this is exactly the kind of talk that led to the death camps in Germany" and that I, "a Jew, of all people, should know that."

Glenn Beck has a history recklessly invoking Nazi Germany and the Holocaust in order to advance his political agenda. But never before has Beck accused Jews - including survivors of the Holocaust and their children and grandchildren - of paving the way for fascism. Through his comments, Beck has demonstrated that he has no idea what leads to fascism. Jews and others, who were victims of the Holocaust, do not have the luxury of his ignorance.

Beck's reflexive hatred for government is rejected by Americans of all backgrounds, who have seen the powerful role government can play in providing us with greater freedom, security, and opportunity. I am proud of the work we do at Jewish Funds for Justice, where our belief that we are all made in the image of the divine compels us to petition private enterprise, charities, and yes, the government, to do their part to ensure our shared divinity.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Filner asks, "Do Rand Paul and John Stossel want to take us back to a racist past from which so many people gave their lives to liberate us?"

Yesterday, Fox News' John Stossel argued that "it's time now to repeal that part of" the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibited discrimination in places of public accommodation, stating, "You can call it public accommodation, and it is, but it's a private business." Today, Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA), a Civil Rights activist and Freedom Rider, responded:

A "private" business generally operates on a public thoroughfare, is protected by public police and fire departments, is served by public transportation, is staffed by people educated in public schools, is protected against fraud by the public justice system, may serve food or sell products protected by public inspection agencies, etc, etc, etc. Surely the public has a right to insist on non-racist policies!

As a Freedom Rider in 1961, I rode on an interstate, publicly franchised Greyhound bus, and, as a member of an integrated group, was denied access to restrooms, lunch counters, and waiting rooms. The Supreme Court rightly ruled this was unconstitutional. Do Rand Paul and John Stossel want to take us back to a racist past from which so many people gave their lives to liberate us?

  • EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Frank says Ingraham "takes lying to a new level"

Blog ››› ››› JEREMY SCHULMAN & DAVE HUGHES

In a statement obtained by Media Matters, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) blasted Laura Ingraham for once again advancing a "rumor" that he might not run for reelection. Frank called the rumor "completely false."

Last week -- after Ingraham repeatedly claimed on Twitter that "sources" had told her that Frank would not run for re-election -- Frank called the story "entirely false" and added that Ingraham "made no attempt to verify whether or not this is true - which it is not."

As Media Matters documented, Ingraham repeated her "rumor" last night on Bill O'Reilly's Fox News show.
