From the September 12 edition of CBN's The 700 Club:
EFREM GRAHAM: A deadly day across North Africa as angry Muslim mobs took to the streets. And today, Libyan protestors killed American ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans at the consulate there. It all started in Egypt, where protestors scaled the walls of the US Embassy in Cairo and tore up the American flag. The mostly Islamic demonstrators are furious about a film attacking the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The film was reportedly produced in the US.
Protestors replaced the American flag with a black flag with an Islamic inscription similar to the one used by al-Qaeda. It says "there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet."
VICTORIA NULAND, STATE DEPT. SPOKESPERSON: We are obviously working with Egyptian security to try and restore order at the Embassy and to work with them to try to get the situation under control.
GRAHAM: Today the American Embassy in Egypt says their people are all safe and accounted for, but the situation is far from under control. Shortly after violence erupted in Egypt, officials received reports of a new attack at the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The mob soon overwhelmed Libyan security forces, firing weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the attacks. In a statement she said: "the United States deplores any intentional effort to degenerate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: there is never any justification for violent acts of this kind."
The Israeli filmmaker responsible for the anti-Muslim movie is in hiding today. He says his film is intended to be a political statement condemning Islam. A radical Islamic group claimed responsibility for the attacks. Local media estimated that about 2,000 people participated in the Egyptian protests. Efrem Graham, CBN News.
PAT ROBERTSON: You know, you wonder what it is in these Muslims that causes them to go crazy because somebody says something about Muhammad, most of which happens to be true. He took his favorite wife, when she was either 8 or 9 years old, and he was 53 and he began having sexual relations with that 8 or 9 year old child. Now we call that pedophile-pedophilia in this country. But with him it was like a holy act. He had a number of wives, and this movie showed him having sexual intercourse with one or more of his wives and I guess the Muslims got upset about that. But Muhammad was very frank about what he did and what he didn't do and you read some of the writings of Muhammad and what he has to say, it's all in there. But he seemed to, you know Muslims can have four wives and he probably had more than his quota but nevertheless, why do they riot? Why do they kill people? What is it about this religion that makes them so terribly defensive? The reason they're so defensive is because they cannot defend some of the stuff they believe and therefore they are very protective of it. What do you think? Glad to see you. I mean if a man is 53 years old and he starts having sex with an 8 year old?
KRISTI WATTS: Well of course I mean that's vile, on so many different standards, but-
ROBERTSON: Well he did it!
WATTS: No, that's what I'm saying! It's vile. I think the thing that, when I was watching the news and I was watching all the coverage, the thing that kind of bothered me the most was the fact that when there were so many things going on in Libya we sent our troops over there to protect them and so it was one of those things that how quickly people forget you're retaliating against us. That's the thing that really, kinda set --
ROBERTSON: Good thinking, good thinking. Oh you know they don't appreciate what you're doing. You know it's -- we -- there was an article today about "oh, should we have a presence in the Middle East?" We obviously have to protect the oil, we have to protect the Suez Canal, we have to protect the trade routes. And it's a very important part of the world, but I tell you that you know Ishmael, the Bible says, was like a wild donkey. I mean he was just a wild man and apparently he's -- that spirit has pervaded these people. And it's just crazy, but they do it. Y'know there'll be one Miss Universe contest and they go crazy. One cartoon about Muhammad and they go crazy. They wanna kill people, they shoot things, they tear things up. So anyhow, maybe sanity will be restored one day. But it won't be anytime soon.
