MSNBC's Brewer falsely claimed Bill Clinton "reportedly told" Telegraph that "Obama was going to, quote, 'have to kiss my you-know-what' "

On MSNBC Live, Contessa Brewer falsely claimed that former President Bill Clinton "reportedly told London's The Telegraph paper that [Sen.] Barack Obama was going to, quote, 'have to kiss my you-know-what,' unquote, if he wanted the former president's help." In fact, the Telegraph article quoted an anonymous "senior Democrat who worked for Mr Clinton," who in turn cited another anonymous source: "One person told me that Bill said Obama would have to quote kiss my ass close quote, if he wants his support."

MSNBC's Brewer uncritically aired Bush's misleading assertion that ANWR, continental shelf drilling would "give this country a chance to help" with gas prices

MSNBC's Contessa Brewer uncritically aired President Bush's assertion that the "United States has an opportunity to help increase the supply of oil on the market, therefore taking pressure off gasoline for our hardworking Americans, and that I've proposed to the Congress that they open up ANWR, and open up the continental shelf, and give this country a chance to help us through this difficult period." However, federal researchers have found that any benefit from the oil exploration Bush suggests would not impact the U.S. oil supply for at least a decade.

On MSNBC Live, Brewer did not note that McCain acknowledged soliciting Hagee's endorsement

While discussing John Hagee's apology for his controversial remarks concerning the Catholic Church, MSNBC's Contessa Brewer stated that Sen. John McCain "has pointed out" that Hagee was not his personal pastor for 20 years, "and says, 'Look, I'm not going to repudiate the endorsement of this man. I don't like the comments that he made, but I'll take his endorsement if he wants to give it.' " However, Brewer did not mention that McCain has admitted that he sought Hagee's endorsement.

MSNBC's Brewer baselessly claimed Obama "seemed to take a shot at -- potentially -- his rival, Hillary Clinton" during discussion of basketball

MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer introduced a report about Sen. Barack Obama's appearance on HBO's Real Sports by saying, "[T]he Democratic presidential hopeful talked about how basketball shaped his life. And he seemed to take a shot at -- potentially -- his rival, Hillary Clinton." Brewer did not include the fully context of Obama's comments, which makes clear that he was not "tak[ing] a shot at" Clinton.

MSNBC's Brewer on McCain's housing crisis speech: "Is this a real turning point for him, being this specific and detailed on what the economy needs?"

After playing a video clip of Sen. John McCain's March 25 speech on the housing crisis, MSNBC's Contessa Brewer asked, "Is this a real turning point for him, being this specific and detailed on what the economy needs?" Brewer provided no examples from the speech to support her claim that McCain was being "specific and detailed on what the economy needs." In fact, in the speech, McCain's "specific" proposals consisted of changes to the tax code that he has previously endorsed, raising the down payment requirement for Federal Housing Authority loans and convening two meetings.

Brewer uncritically reported that Reagan "says she typically waits until after the GOP convention to announce her support"

After noting former first lady Nancy Reagan's endorsement of Sen. John McCain, MSNBC's Contessa Brewer uncritically reported, "Mrs. Reagan says she typically waits until after the GOP convention to announce her support but says it's clear the Republican Party has chosen its nominee." However, Reagan endorsed George W. Bush well before the convention in 2000.

So that's why NBC and MSNBC wanted Clinton's schedules?

On Today, Tim Russert discussed the schedules from Sen. Hillary Clinton's time as first lady and asserted: "Senator Clinton has made her experience such a part of this campaign, particularly her eight years as first lady. So this may be very rich in terms of exactly how did she spend her time, who did she meet with?" Russert added that "this, I think, today will be analyzed very closely by all of us at NBC News and media organizations across the country." Indeed, while NBC and MSNBC journalists discussed more substantive issues related to her schedules, they also repeatedly discussed what the schedules say, or do not say, about where Hillary Clinton was during Monica Lewinsky's encounters with President Clinton, in many cases teasing segments or leading them with that information.

Brewer and Stoddard failed to note FCC chairman's criticism of McCain's letter for Paxson

On MSNBC Live, discussing the New York Times article on Sen. John McCain's ties to lobbyist Vicki Iseman, Contessa Brewer asked A.B. Stoddard, "[I]n Washington, is it unusual if you get a letter from a constituent or a lobbyist on a matter, and you're concerned about it, that you would move on it?" Brewer was referring to the Times' reporting that Iseman "asked Mr. McCain's staff to send a letter to the [Federal Communications] commission to help Paxson [Communications], now Ion Media Networks." Stoddard replied, "Senators and members of Congress act all the time on behalf of concerns from their constituents, as well as lobbyists, if they think that they are valid points to make, and they're acting on their own beliefs." But neither Brewer nor Stoddard noted that then-FCC chairman William E. Kennard expressed concern about McCain's letter, calling it "highly unusual."

MSNBC's Brewer defended McCain's reversals on tax cuts and immigration with falsehoods

MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer falsely claimed of Sen. John McCain's reversal on tax cuts that McCain "didn't want to vote for it because he didn't see cuts in spending and he wants to see a fiscally responsible government," and she also falsely suggested that McCain did not change his position on the issue of immigration.

Citing Drudge headline, MSNBC's Brewer suggested Latinos would react negatively to Clinton campaign change

While discussing the news that Sen. Hillary Clinton had replaced her campaign manager, MSNBC's Contessa Brewer asked Kathleen Kennedy Townsend: "[T]he Drudge Report has a headline that reads, quote, 'Adiós: Clinton's Top Latina Sidelined.' Are you concerned at all about the way Hispanic voters might interpret this shakeup heading into Texas?" Neither the Drudge Report nor MSNBC offered any reason why Solis Doyle's replacement as campaign manager might have anything to do with her being Latina or any reason why Latino voters might react in any way to the staff change.

Announcing Robertson's endorsement of Giuliani, MSNBC failed to note Robertson's numerous controversial remarks

Reporting on the announcement that Pat Robertson would endorse Rudy Giuliani for
president, MSNBC's Contessa Brewer stated, "A big coup, of course, for Giuliani,
who is fighting to win the votes of social conservatives." NBC political
director Chuck Todd described Robertson as "the guy that almost invented the
social conservative political movement" and asserted: "Robertson is a foreign
policy hawk, and on foreign policy he sees eye to eye with Giuliani." But
neither Brewer nor Todd noted that Robertson has repeatedly made
controversial
and inflammatory comments,
including calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez,
and endorsing the
late Rev. Jerry Falwell's comments that "the abortionists," "the feminists," and
the American Civil Liberties Union "helped this [the September 11, 2001,
terrorist attacks] happen."

MSNBC's Brewer claimed "even conservative Republican presidential candidates are trying to sidestep" SCHIP -- but several support veto

On MSNBC Live, discussing
Democrats' efforts to override President Bush's veto of the SCHIP bill, Contessa
Brewer stated that "even conservative Republican presidential candidates are
trying to sidestep this issue." However, several of the leading Republican
candidates have spoken in support of Bush's veto, including Sen. John McCain and
Mitt Romney.

Gender stereotypes and discussions of Armani suits dominate media's coverage of Speaker-elect Pelosi

Since the Democratic Party won control of both the
House and the Senate, the media have focused on such issues as Pelosi's
choice of attire and whether being female will affect her ability to lead. MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer
wondered if Pelosi's "personal feelings [were] getting in the way
of effective leadership" -- a problem she suggested would not surface in
"men-run leadership posts" -- and whether men were "more
capable of taking personality clashes."
