O'Reilly nuanced view of foreign policy: warned of Nazi-Iraq parallels in 2003, Nazi-Iran parallels in 2006

In his latest syndicated column arguing that “Americans” need to “wise up and see the” Iranian and “Islamic fascist threat” facing the United States, Bill O'Reilly made nearly identical arguments to those he presented in a March 2003 column advocating war against Iraq.

In his September 9 syndicated column arguing that “Americans” need to “wise up and see the” Iranian and “Islamic fascist threat” facing the United States, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly made nearly identical arguments to those he presented in a March 10, 2003, column advocating war against Iraq. In the two columns, O'Reilly compared the situations in Iraq and Iran, respectively, to “the rise of” Nazi Germany, and those Americans who don't -- or didn't -- recognize the “threat” to the majority of Americans who were opposed to “confronting Hitler” in the late 1930s. Additionally, in his September 9 column, O'Reilly described what he termed the “goals” of “Islamic fascists” -- "[k]ill Jews and damage America" -- just as he described, in 2003, Saddam Hussein's purported desire to “slaughter Jews and, indeed, Americans if [he] had the power to do so.” And in both his March 2003 and current columns, O'Reilly concluded that if we did not defeat Iran and “Islamic fascism” (September 9) or Iraq (March 2003), the consequences would be more death and destruction.

  • 2006: O'Reilly argued that Iran and “Islamic fascists' ” rise in power mirrors “the rise of fascism in pre-World War II Germany”:

The parallels between the rise of fascism in pre-World War II Germany and the rise of Islamic fascism today are startling.

  • 2003: O'Reilly similarly began his March 2003 column noting that “the current Iraq situation parallels the rise of The Third Reich 70 years ago”:

It is absolutely eerie how closely the current Iraq situation parallels the rise of The Third Reich 70 years ago.

  • 2006: O'Reilly argued that those Americans who “do not understand the worldwide jihad” led by Iran and “Islamic fascists” mirror the “80 percent of Americans” who “were against confronting Hitler” in the 1930s:

According to polls taken in the 1930s, as many as 80 percent of Americans were against confronting Hitler at that time.

  • 2003: O'Reilly compared those opposed to the then-impeding Iraq war to the “millions of us” who “were vehemently opposed to confronting Hitler:”

Millions of Americans are against a war in Iraq today, and millions of us were vehemently opposed to confronting Hitler as well.

  • 2006: O'Reilly described the “goals” of “Islamic fascists” as being: “Kill Jews and damage America”:

While there are certainly rivalries and differences among all the Islamic fascists, their goals are very similar: Kill Jews and damage America.

  • 2003: O'Reilly asked whether “anyone today believe[s] that Al Qaeda or Saddam would not slaughter Jews and, indeed, Americans if they had the power to do so”:

Does anyone today believe that Al Qaeda or Saddam would not slaughter Jews and, indeed, Americans if they had the power to do so? So what is the difference between a dictator like Saddam and Adolph Hitler?

  • 2006: O'Reilly concluded if the United States did not “defeat Islamic fascism,” “it is just a matter of time before more of us lie dead in the streets”:

Americans are certainly entitled to debate the wisdom and effectiveness of the current campaign to defeat Islamic fascism, but defeat it we must. For if we don't, it is just a matter of time before more of us lie dead in the streets.

  • 2003: O'Reilly concluded that “courageous people” must “confront” Iraq because, as “we can learn from history ... [e]vil has a way of killing people”:

Nobody can predict the outcome and aftermath of any war. But we can learn from history. Evil has a way of killing people; that's a fact. And the only way that evil will be stopped is for just and courageous people to confront it.
