Media Downplays Failings of Cancer Treatment

Media outlets are reportedly failing to properly report cancer treatments that fail or contain serious side effects, according to a report at MedPage Today.

The story cites a study by the Archives of Internal Medicine that analyzed more than 400 articles in newspapers and magazines related to cancer treatments.

The report stated:

The researchers examined 436 articles appearing in eight daily newspapers in Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York (including The New York Times) as well as Newsweek, Parade, People, Redbook, and Time.

“Very few news reports about cancer discuss death and dying, and even those that do generally do not mention palliative and hospice care,” Jessica Fishman, PhD, and colleagues, wrote in the findings.
